    can anyone tell me the best way to convert an mpeg2 file to mpeg1? i have tried using tmpgenc as suggested in the guide and the resulting file is jerky and doesnt play smoothly

    This should work fine. Are you sure that you selected a Tmpgenc template with the same framerate as the source mpeg as if you didn't this will cause some jerkyness on playback.
