If I can ask a favour.
Can you guys post an example of a good clean capture, as well as the equipment used ? That way I have something to compare to and then the standard is set, for me to "catch up to", for want of better wording.
Or just refer me to a thread where all this is already posted.
Thanks for any help.

Sidenote: In my experience VHS home videos usually present a bigger challenge for decent capturing and post-processing than commercial tapes or broadcasted material which has normally been pre-processed ("tamed") to pass studio compliance tests. "Perfect" sources are always a valid/recommended entry for serving as a reference though.

Once more, the priority is the player. Your LG V281 DVD/VCR Combo is a bottleneck, and putting a Panasonic ES-10 next to it is just a patch/workaround.
But one step at the time, if you do not aim to the ultimate quality capture you may end up with satisfactory results. -

Unfortunately that's just a standard Sony model from 2005, not one that will help as a passthrough TBC.

@brad: Thanks for your post. Disappointing to know, but it's the only one locally I could find. Anyway, let's see how a standard one works for now.
Sidenote: I asked AI if it had tbc, and first it said yes, and then after consulting again, it said no. Don't trust AI. /shrugs. -
Need some help, please.
Received my Hauppauge USB Live 2, and installed the software which includes the drivers. Ran into a problem with VirtualDub. I go capture avi, and choose the USB Live 2 under device, but as soon as I go to Capture pin, it restarts my pc.
Happened 3 times already, and Virtualdub seems really sluggish when using it. Very slow. -
Which driver version are you using? Which VirtualDub version? Does the mpeg2 capture work with "Hauppauge Capture" software?
If you own the old USB-Live 2 (122000 version) start with 6_0_119_36075 drivers (capturable range 16-254) or 6_0_119_39299 drivers (newer, capturable range 1-254, but level shrink reported) and VirtualDub 1.9.11.
If you own the new USB-Live 2 (122020 version) start with 122020_5_2025_1120_43324 drivers and VirtualDub 1.9.11.

6_0_119_36075 drivers here: driver10_6_0_119_36075.zip
You may want to use AmarecTV 3.10 once everything is working. -
Ok, the 122020 you mention is probably Dec 2020, correct?
I downloaded the software straight from their site
https://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support/support_capture.html
Driver date: 18 Nov 2025
Driver version: 5.2025.1118.43322
VirtualDub version: 1.10.4
I have a Windows 11 pc. -
Try CaptureFlux to see if it's a driver issue or a Vdub issue.
-
I did as you said.
For a long while, I could see video, but not hear any audio, after I installed Hauppauge Capture. Just a few moments ago, it seems it suddenly self corrected, and audio is now clearly heard. I really did not do anything different.
Display and no audio on OBS.
Also, display and no audio with CaptureFlux. However, no crash issue with CaptureFlux.Last edited by VHS-Digital-Buddy; 2nd Sep 2026 at 13:33.

Try it also with AmarecTV 3.10.
Check for correct audio device/link option.
Make sure you have selected the correct video standard and input (composite).
Also make sure to start with playing and outputting regular PAL tape/settings (720x576/fps=25.00/YUY2)
Some capture programs/devices/drivers will not show a picture when the video standard is not set correctly. -
Whatever you end up using, you have to select the audio source, Just so you know, Vdub does not support audio monitoring, you just have to click capture and hope for the best.

Head switching noise? Use my Custom JVC VCR Service Remote Control (PTU94023B) to eliminate it!

-
Little Progress:
As mentioned Hauppauge Capture has video and sound. Same with OBS. Sound was muted in OBS.
Display, but still no sound in CaptureFlux.
AmarecTV is a disaster. I open the exe and it throws out error messages in unreadable text.
Virtualdub does not like my capture card. I managed to get to capture pin in Virtualdub, by uninstalling Roxio drivers and software, but trying to capture something, just crashes the program and restarts my pc.
This is immensely frustrating. -
Try the latest VirtualDub2.

Did you set the audio source in CaptureFlux, It may not pick it up automatically. Also, In vdub you have to uncheck audio monitoring during capture or it will stutter.
Have you checked your captures? Not monitoring sound doesn't mean you're not capturing it, Some capture card drivers conflict with OS sound drivers and don't allow capturing and monitoring at the same time. -
I did a 20 second capture now with the Hauppauge device, and Hauppauge Capture software. All settings are set correctly for PAL capture.
One thing though, it's said to medium quality, and High quality will balloon the file size.

Thoughts are welcome. -
I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve here, you are not following up with the posts, Not sure if you still need help.
-
I'm going with what works so far. Virtualdub and CaptureFlux still freeze/crash.
-
Ok, I've narrowed down the problem.
VirtualDub2 says my CPU usage is 100%. Never had this problem before, until I started using Hauppauge.
It's only Hauppauge Capture that doesn't freeze or crash.
I previously used Virtualdub fine with Roxio and Nero. It just crashes with the USB live 2.
Every Virtualdub version I've now tried crashes with the Hauppauge. I'm pretty sure it's just a setting. As mentioned before, it also affects CaptureFlux and OBS. Possibly a driver.Last edited by VHS-Digital-Buddy; 3rd Sep 2026 at 06:31.

Well, the capture is working, but without knowing anything about the source or recording, it is hard to give a serious opinion.

It seems to be a live aerial broadcast with very poor/unstable reception and/or was it a copied tape?
Or was it recorded on a malfunctioning recorder?
Better try a good, stable source.
Probably this?
Just delete the auto_doubler.ini/auto_deint.ini

Thanks The_Doman. Those were exactly the messages I was getting. Although it was indeed readable, I mistyped. lol
Works fine now.
I received a bunch of tapes from someone, and it looks pretty good on the tv. LG V281 VHS DVD Combo is my VCR device.Originally Posted by The_DomanLast edited by VHS-Digital-Buddy; 3rd Sep 2026 at 06:24.

Well, it can monitor audio, but in my experience, it often can cause problems with some capture devices/drivers, resulting in high CPU usage, desync, frame drops, or no picture during preview.
It is best to leave it off during capture and rely on the level meter indicators.
This is also one of the reasons I prefer to use AmarecTV, but I really miss having those audio level indicators.

First, you just need to make sure the sound goes through. You can test it before you start capturing.
Second, as you mentioned, turn on Volume meter and you will always "see" the sound.
Third, VD has a special setting in Timing to play with in case you have an issue to play back sound during the capture.Head switching noise? Use my Custom JVC VCR Service Remote Control (PTU94023B) to eliminate it!
