Why won't this video play correctly?

Only opens and plays in AviDemux. MPC and none of the Windows players only show a garbled, lower half of the video.
I've tried taking off a few key frames in AviDemux and creating a new "copy" of the video. Same error. Audio plays fine on both.
I have a few of these from the same "collection" DVD that don't play correctly.
Any ideas?

IIRC, some DVD recorders and PVRs as mentioned the thread above produced MPEG-PS files. I seem to recall getting some -PS files a long time ago, probably from a PVR.

Found the original "test" DVD(R). Copied it to the HDD. Ran it through FixVTS. No help. Ran the folder through MakeMKV and found the problem. Each music video shows up with 2 chapters. There is an animated video clip/intro you have to click to get the music video to play. Somehow this menu item is attached to each selection/music video.....creating an open GOP situation somehow for most of the clips. Looks like I'm re-encoding the offending clips.
Thanks everyone for the input. Good thing this DVD never made it to final production. The menu is clunky as hell and confusing.

There is a software that will remove the old menu & then you can create a new menu with it.
It is TitleWriter.

If that doesn't work for you . PGCEdit probably can fix the old menu.
It can do a lot but has a steep learning curve.

Just to note I'm not a fan of DVDStyler.
I can only get it to do what I need sometimes. Other times it fails.

The GOP (26) size is too big for DVD (max is 15 for PAL DVD).

It's TOO MUCH INFORMATION - but it's the best I can do.

Download clever FFmpeg-GUI and start it.
Follow all steps for the first start.

Then click on Select source file.
Point at VTS_01_1.VOB
Answer the question with Yes (to rip the full movie) and click Rip.

Wait until ripping is finished. Click on Multiplex.
Set mkv as container and click multiplex.

Test the new created mkv.

It gave be the same thing that MakeMKV wanted to give me, and the menu is still attached.
Somebody REALLY didn't know what they were doing with this thing. I think they are going
to need to gather up the original files again and start over. As you can see, the menu is still causing problems.

Do you see the menu (which doesn't work here) at the beginning of the new MKV file for a certain amount of time, and then the actual video starts?
If so, just cut that part out.

The menu plays for a few seconds.
The menu/DVD contains PLAY VIDEOS, PLAY CONCERT, and BONUS MATERIAL.
I could easily chop this up but they have their heart set on a data DVD full of the individual mpeg2 music videos.
I've done that already over a year ago BUT.....most of them suffer from the open GOP problem.....which I just found out a month ago.
It's not a "job"....just trying to help out one side of the arguing parties.

That's what I tried first, then "By Chapter" in DVDDecrypter worked perfectly, except for the open GOP issues.

Do you have the original DVD or a rip from the original DVD ?

I'm told it was a "test before press" from Stream AV Productions from EMI source material. Verbatim DVD-R.

I agree with lingyi if you do not want a menu use DVDShrink.

If you want to remove the old menu & create a new menu then Titlewriter can do this.
It can also add a menu to a DVDShrink rip.

Since a DVD -R shuld not be encrypted you should be able to rip it with menu.
ImgBurn should be able to do this. Use Build mode to do this.
Other DVD ripping software like DVDFab can also rip & keep the menu.
ProWo can answer if Clever can do this.

If you want to "fix" an original menu then you will need to use PGCEdit. ( There may be other softwares that can do this but I have not used it.)
It has been some time since I used PGCEdit but IIRC it can repair some menus without having to do complicated editing.
The DVD menu I worked on with it required complicated editing.

No offense but I grew up with DVDShrink, DVDDecrypter, TDA and all of the rippers that have come and gone....and have torn apart dozens of commercial music DVDs over the decades....creating custom backups and just tearing them apart for the practice.

I still use DVDShrink often. So for me it has not "come& gone".If it will not rip this DVD then it won't. No problem.

I guess the question is have you found any software that will rip this DVD -R as is ?
ImgBurn will only rip to an image format like .iso so you need to use a virtual drive if ripped with ImgBurn.

If software like CloneDVD or DVDFab won't rip this DVD -R.
Then try IsoBuster or IsoPuzzle & see if they can.

You already know you have to rip it to a HDD or SDD to edit the menu.

Ripping to get what I want was never the issue.....the issue is that half of the individual music videos have the open GOP issue.

Use whatever program you like to do a complete rip of this DVD.
Then process it with DVDRebuilderFree using HCEnc.
It is supposed to fix open GOP.

I have not used it on a PAL DVD.
Or a DVD with this "Format settings, GOP : M=5, N=26" as posted by jagabo as a problem.
I believe it is worth a try.

Using the free version always compresses to DVD5.
There is a workaround by making changes in the rebuilder.ini file .
The payware version has a DVD5 or DVD9 setting.
I'm posting my rebuilder.ini file as a text file so I can post it.
If you use it change the extension back to .ini.
Settings for this are hard to find & this one is for "wide screen" & DVD9.
You will also need to set up a HC.ini file.
The AUTOGOP can be 12 to 15 for PAL.

The term "open GOP" refers to two distinct technical issues depending on context: video encoding artifacts or PC boot errors.

1. Video Encoding: Open vs. Closed GOP
In video processing, a Group of Pictures (GOP) is a sequence of frames.

Open GOP: Frames may reference data from previous or future GOPs. Default in many codecs (e.g., x265). Can cause issues with editing, chapter markers, or older DVD players.
Closed GOP: Frames only reference data within the same GOP. Recommended for compatibility and editing.
Fix: To force a closed GOP in FFmpeg/x265, add open-gop=0 to your command string. For x264, GOPs are closed by default.

I now guess I got that wrong.

At least 10 times. I already have the individual videos on my HDD.....for several years probably. A few weeks ago I sent one to one of the members and he could not play it. So I started checking all of the videos and realized something was wrong with many of them. And here we are today. I can only assume that the authoring software screwed up somehow. I ripped them, named them(song titles) and kept them for safe keeping.
