Nothing wrong with Smart Renderer 6, but Video Mastering Works 8 exports to other formats, frame rates, and resolutions, and it is the one that matches VRD with the same, or similar features, but if you don't need those other features then Smart Renderer 6 will be fine, and cheaper.
I have no idea if either of them handles TV broadcast/recorded files like VRD and SMC can.

Try TMPGEnc MPEG Smart Renderer 6.
https://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tmsr6.html
I bought it and very happy with it. -
TMPGEnc are ripping people off by forcing them to buy both programs if they want all features that VRD has in just one program.
Smart Renderer 6 cannot export to other formats, or resize to other resolutions like Mastering Works and VRD can do.
This is correct, but this is due to VRD not being developed now for over 3.5 years because the VRD creator Dan Rosen passed away in late 2022.
That is why i keep saying that for most VRD users who only work with TV broadcast files, all they need is VRD.
The only reason why i refuse to buy TMPGEnc is because i would need to buy both Mastering Works 8 and Smart Renderer 6 to do what i need with my 4k HEVC camera recorded files, that is around US$200 and i would not even need all of the features in both.
VRD, which i paid US$60 for in 2013, and Smart Media Cutter which i just paid US$40 for is all i need right now heading into the future. -

I wrote it in my previous post, US$60 back in 2013.
No it cannot export nor recode to other formats nor resize resolution, your screenshot shows only switching containers, as mentioned by Alwyn.
Mastering Works 8 does the same export to other formats and resolutions the same as VRD can do.
You need both TMPGEnc programs to do what VRD does with one tool, i already tested both TMPGEnc programs extensively late last year and posted my results in one of the threads in this forum.
Changing to other formats (other than container) or changing resolutions requires a full recode.
TMPGEnc Smart Renderer 6 is primarily designed to export back to the same format as your source file and just recode a few frames around your cuts.
I believe that VRD was the very first software to do Frame Accurate cutting and Smart Rendering before any other software.
I still don't believe that TMPGEnc Smart Render is as good as the one used in VRD, others may disagree.
VRD uses a feature known as Intelligent Recode which has a built in export quality preset for each export format that you wish to recode to, so there is no need to manually set an export Video Bitrate for the recode to whatever format you want, just select your export preset and VRD does the rest, and this is probably the best feature about VRD.
I was using TMPGEnc Express 6.0 many years ago in the DVD days, then i found VRD Pro and i never used any other editing tool until around 1 year ago when i started recording my camera videos in 4k/60p HEVC (i used 4k/60p AVC before that) and VRD had full support for AVC in 4k, but Dan had not completed his full implementation of 4k HEVC when he passed away in 2022, so i have issues cutting and joining them, so i now use Smart Media Cutter as it uses the same Frame Accurate Smart Render feature as VRD and handles 4k HEVC file perfectly.
I use VRD for my Titles and exporting (intelligent recode) to other formats and resolutions when required.
Both of the TMPGEnc edit tools are pretty good packages, but as i said before, neither of them alone can do what VRD can do on it's own.Last edited by Bridgy; 11th Apr 2026 at 08:46.

I just downloaded Smart Renderer 6 again and tried to import a 4k HEVC file to try exporting to AVC, but i forgot that the trial version will not allow import/export of 4k HEVC files, which i stated in my posts last year was another dumb thing about Pegasys not to allow potential buyers to test these files.
I imported a 4k AVC file and all i can do is export it back to 4k AVC (i can change containers only) and no export to other resolutions.

This software will add titles and transitions, but the titles can only be done as an overlay onto the actual video frames, which i hate.
VRD does not to transitions, but with it's Title creation tool you can't overlay it onto the video frames, you can only do it using an Image file to overlay the text on, or use a solid color background with your text (i use black background on all titles)
I create my own custom Titles and credits because i have more options and control, and i sometimes use a graphics image in my title which i can't do with VRD.Last edited by Bridgy; 11th Apr 2026 at 09:58.

Everything you said is correct.
BUT, if you change resolution and choose different output format you will have to do FULL re-encode of the video and not smart render. And this defeats the purpose of smart render, doesn't it?
And the same with VRD - if you change resolution and choose different output format you will have to do FULL re-encode of the video and not smart render, won't you?
So, I don't understand the point of your arguments. -
You was the one who said that TMPGEnc Smart Renderer 6 can export to other formats, i just said that it can't, with screenshots to show this, your screenshot showed changing Container only.
I always said a long time ago that Smart Renderer 6 does Smart Rendering, just like VRD does, and does it very well too.
My reference to Recoding to other formats or resizing has nothing to do with Smart Render in TMPGEnc, i was just adding that if you want to recode to other formats or resolution you will need Mastering Works 8, or use VRD, which does Smart Cut, Smart Rendering, and intelligent Recode to other containers and formats, and resizes too.
I am just trying to explain it the best way i can, i am not trying to create any arguments.
To give you an idea of my work flow, so i record in 4k/60p HEVC, i now use SMC to Cut my files and Smart Render back to original format, i then import into VRD Pro to add my custom Titles if needed, and i export to other formats if needed, using the Intelligent Recode function in VRD.
Sometimes i only need to do frame accurate Cutting and Smart Render back to original format, so i don't use VRD at all.
There is no way that i will pay nearly US$200 for both TMPGEnc tools to do all of those things when i already have VRD Pro and SMC.
I wish that VRD was able to cut and save my 4k HEVC files properly, sadly it can't so i need SMC for this.
Most of my Recoding is done to 1080/60p AVC because some people who i give files to do not have a TV able to play 4k files, or cannot play them in the HEVC container, so giving them the 1080p recode is the easiest option.Last edited by Bridgy; 11th Apr 2026 at 10:28.

Both TMPGEnc are great tools, and if they suit your needs then that is great, and if you don't need to recode/export to other Formats or resize, then Smart Render 6 is the one to use, but it is just a shame that Pegasys will not just combine Smart Renderer 6 into Mastering Works so they have just 1 tool, just like VRD does it, and in the future it seems like Smart Media Cutter will be the true equal and possible replacement for VRD for some people like me.
All good.
BTW i noted you had VRD in your Screenshot in one of your previous post, have you actually got a license for it.
