  1. I'm trying to transcode some old Topfield .rec files into a more useful format I can edit with avidemux.

My files will load in WinFF, but all the options and controls simply say "convert". I see nothing about transcoding.

The files in question are MPEG-2 video in TS container with a custom header containing program information. It would be good to convert to something like mkv. (It would also be cool if I could somehow retain or extract that header information?)

You can simpy remux your ts to mkv with mkvtoolnix or clever FFmpeg-GUI.
But you can also import your ts in Avidemux as it is. Avidemux can handle it.

For some reason, this doesn't work for me. (I'm using AviDemux 2.8.1 on Windows 10)

"Attempt to open [video name]. rec failed!"

    Wow! This actually works!

I can't believe I've spent all these years not knowing how to convert these files, messing around with ancient horrible software like Project X, trying to find a way to purchase a licence for discontinued software like VideoReDo… and all along, this whole time, I had software installed that can do it simply and easily! Why has no one ever suggested MKVtoolnix to me before!

    THANK YOU ProWo!
