  1. Hi people,
Hope someone can help, I have an 1.1ghz AMD Thunderbird on an Asus M/B, 640meg of ram, 2 30 gig 7200rpm drives set up in a raid array, capturing with an Asus 3800 pro, running Win98se. I'm losing about 20 frames every 3 gig of capture at 29.97fps and frame size of 708x480 with VirtualDub. Is this normal, I've tried just about everything I can think of, anybody have any suggestions? Thanks a bunch!

  2. 1. What codec are you using to capture with?
    2. What is the CPU % usage reported by Virtual Dub?

You are pushing the limitation of your hardware at that resolution if you are compressing the heck out of the capturing process.

  3. Oh yeah I knew I forgot something, huffuv codec, and the cpu is usually around 83% to low 90's. I want the best quality I can get, I'm going to be playing with svcd and xsvcd formats. Will I be sacrificing any quality lowering the frame size? Thanks again!

  4. 20 frames per every 3 GB! Why are you even worrying about that...its insignificant!

  5. I think its more the fact that I'm dropping any frames, I used to capture with this crappy tv tuner at 352x240 29.97fps and not lose any frames period. 20 frames is just under a second, won't that knock out the audio/video sync, or does VirtualDub keep track of that? I know its petty but I want to know whats not up to par I guess.

  6. The the clock in the capture card and soundcard are slightly off, Virtualdub will drop the occasional frame to KEEP A/V sync.

    This isn't a problem.

  7. Well, first, you probably still can capture at 352x240 without any frames lost. Upping the ante to 704x480 puts a whole lot of extra demand on your system, so it's probably not worth comparing.

VirtualDub does keep track of dropped frames if you enable the sync audio to video option in capture settings. If you drop that few frames, you shouldn't have any problem with audio sync. I've dropped quite a few more frames than that while capturing 80min worth of video without a/v sync problems.
