i have a Pinnacle PCTV Rave TV tuner which also has an input where i can plug my VHS player or digital cam recorder. but i remember that the bundled software with it is hard to learn and eats up most of my CPU resources.
now, are there any freeware (or a limited trial one) program that i can use to capture straight to a VCD compliant MPEG1? pls advise. thanks people.

Try PowerVCR or WinVCR. They should have a trial version for downloading. The quality is not magnificent (not as good as TMPGEnc) but they'll do what you're asking.
Another option would be to capture using a program like Virtualdub and then encoding it to MPEG using TMPGEnc (which is free for MPEG1).
