Hi all, first post here in the forums. I recorded some family videos on vhs-c many years ago. I used a combo vhs/dvd player to record the vhs-c video on mostly HP DVD-R blank media. The new DVD-R discs will play in the DVD/VHS player that I burned them on. However, I would like to transfer the video on the DVD-R discs to my computer and then onto the cloud for safe storage.

The problem is the discs are not recognized by the dvd drive in the computer. I bought a new external dvd drive as an added test and that does not work either. The drives do recognize a "desktop.ini" file but none of the video files.

I also tried to finalize one of the discs in the dvd/vhs player thinking that maybe these discs were never finalized in the player. It seemed to be working but then the process failed and now the player and the drives do not recognize the disc any longer.

I tried using Nero Video module, and it said video not supported. Tried Nero Recode and couldn't find video files. Nero Rescue Agent didn't work either. I was recommended to use ISOBuster and it did find the video files but it wants me to pay $59.95 for a license key. I'm trying to find a free solution.

Any suggestions or pathway forward from this community?

There's isopuzzle in the software section of this site, but it probably requires an XP PC with the ASPI layer installed

Have you tried using Imgburn to create an ISO from the disk?

Yeah, long shot, but a worth a try. If you're unable to try isopuzzle,
I don't know of anything else bar the pay option you mentioned

Thanks for your suggestions. I will verify if isopuzzle can work in windows 10. Never used it before, is it user friendly?

Yes, just give it a destination folder, hit start, and it will create an iso file

VLC was the first media player I tried. Then winamp, and then windows media player. None of them worked.

Looks like software from Russia. Has anyone else used this successfully and is it safe?

If you decide in the end to buy IsoBuster, look for discount coupons. I seem to always find a deal somwhere. No guarantee they will work because they don't last long, worth a try anyway.

Thanks. I'll be on the lookout for one if I decide to go that way.

Streamfab has recovery software DVDFab Media Recover for DVD.
You can pay for 1 month $27 or longer period if you think you will need that.
Look for discount coupons but they usually work for lifetime or maybe 1 year subscription not monthly, but I could be wrong.

DVDFab Media Recover has been running for almost 20 hrs now and I haven't heard the disc inside spinning at all? Doesn't appear this software is working for me.

Update: I tried another attempt at using the standalone combo dvd/vhs player to finalize a disc. This time it completed successfully and I was able to verify and test it in my external drive on the PC. I have now done about 20 of them and I'm having about an 80% success rate. I will probably just burn the original vhs-c tapes onto DVD again for the failed ones. Overall, I will have about 6 or so DVD's to reburn. On a couple of the failures to finalize, the process counted down from about 3.5 minutes all the way down to zero and never gave any indication that it completed the process. Just seemed like it froze or something. Kind of strange.
