Have a problem with resulting .avi

hi all. i have a problem with a DVD rip. I converted National Lampoons Christmas Vacation to an .avi. file. I sometimes play movies on my portable DVD player. The player sometimes has issues, where i won't be able to watch a DVD all.the way thru. It might have a dirty lens. The thing has a USB port. So anyway, it is a DVD i own.
The .avi file loads in, but takes
almost 5 minutes. The problem has to do with fast-forwarding and rewinding. It is slow as a turtle when doing either of these functions. Is there a way i can fix it where it rewinds and fast-forwards in a normal way, or is it the DVD player that has the issue? Please advise.

You could try to remux the avi to mp4.
You can use clever Ffmpeg-GUI for this.
