  1. When I download videos from social media sites I often find that they crash VLC Player for Windows. Is there a utility that will scan an entire MP4, look for obvious errors, and fix those errors, writing out a new file?

  2. You can try avidemux. It is free.

I did not see any options there for scanning a video for errors or fixing it? They appear to use ffmpeg, so is there an ffmpeg option to scan a video for errors and rewrite it?

  4. A simple remux often helps.
You can use clever Ffmpeg-GUI for that.
Load your mp4, click main, click multiplex, select mp4 as container, click multiplex. Done.

Great idea, but I tried it and the MUXED file still blows up.

  6. Corrupted files happen to exist, but if this happens frequently this is not normal.
You should check the SMART status for the storage device where those files are stored. (Anyone using a computer should regularly check the SMART status for any storage device connected to it, but in such a situation I would be especially cautious, as it may be a first warning of a much more serious underlying issue with your own hardware.)

Also check the event viewer to see if there are specific warnings associated with VLC Media Player crashing.
