  2. As far as I know, you can't add permanent subs without reencoding.

    WinSubMux can add selectable subtitles (you can switch them on and off, like on a DVD) to an MPEG2 file.
    You can find lots of subtitle files here: www.divxsubs.com;
    go to Doom9- http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/software.htm and scroll down to "Subtitles" - you can probably find what you need there to convert the subtitle files to the format that WinsubMux uses.

    Just a note: Nero is the only burning program that seems to work with selectable subs - don't know why, but if I burn with anything else (VDCEasy, CDRWin, etc.) the subtitles don't show up.

    I've had mixed results with VCDEasy and subtitles. If I mux with SVCD-style subs, they never work with vcdimager and usually work with Nero (I grabbed the demo when I was trying to track down this problem). If I mux with CVD-style subs, they never work with Nero but sort of work with vcdimager (sort-of as in most of them work, but some don't show up). Both tend to screw up in my player if the video bitrate goes too high, though.

    How can I convert a .txt subtitle file to a .sub file?

    This is the first few lines of my .txt subtitle file (from the Anime movie Spirited Away).
