Question about Blu Ray Ripper / TV Shows PC and it must be compatible with videogames so no server CPUs. I know this forum is English and my English is not really perfect, I try my best and sometimes use translators. But I have read a lot here. And do not find a good German forum with so many threads on such topics. That's why I registered here today. I want to buy a PC extra for the program (handbrake) 64 bit and a windows system. I do not want to use Intel Quick Sync because in my opinion the quality suffers. But Speed is absolutely impressive with Quick Sync. But quality is often a matter of luck.

I'm really fussy, and watch film by film as a comparison. And if I see only 1 artifact, I start again. With my settings needs my 7700K OC over 5 days for a Blu ray. At almost 80 degrees CPU temperature. With overclocking I get 1 FPS more handbrake Speed. Average Speed is: 1.5 FPS. With Intel Quick Sync 35 FPS. The difference is 5 days versus 1-2 hours with Quick Sync.

Often there is no big difference in quality. But I do not want to use internal graphics of the CPU, quality to love only pure CPU Encoding. I really use very hard settings which requires a lot of CPU power. Even my very expensive Macbook Pro can not do it. Encoding time over 130 hours. I have selected my settings from a really long experience. I want to get the best out of it. With normal settings of handbrake it went in a few hours, but I want my own.
Since Intel is really hot. And my PC is in the bedroom. Is it important, I want a Silent PC. Even with my passive water cooling to 4.8 GHz, fans are heard easily. (7700K)

I'm not happy with my intel 7700K. He's a hothead, and the power without Quick Sync is ridiculously bad. However, gaming is easily possible, and it can be overclocked to 5, GHZ relatively well, but I'm not a fan of overclocking, because the performance does not justify power consumption. But is just a 4 core and I really want to perform a massive upgrade. It's not about the future, but now or in 3 months maximum, but I'm tired of copying my 820 Blu Ray Libary so slowly. (For Apple TV, Kodi, Plex)

I am a passionate collector. And switch to UHD movies soon. But if 1080P needs 130 hours, I do not want to start with 7700K and UHD encoding with High Dynamic Range (HDR) Whether it is now AMD or Intel is not important to me. But Intel somehow became unsympathetic to me. AMD seems to get more for the money. And Intel CPUs are really hot runners. I tend to AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X (3.50GHz / 32 MB) but I really want 32 Core... 2990WX

But when I'm ready to spend so much money. I want to know exactly what speed I can expect in Handbrake. Benchmarks bring me nothing. Since nobody uses my settings. Unfortunately, I do not find a user who uses my settings for a blu ray with threadripper. I encode in placebo speed so that's slower than very slow... And H265 10 BIT MP4. (10 bits not for the color, but because better synonymous with 8-bit films with H265 Handbrake on) Quality I have earlier made bitrate 4500 for H264 and 2500 for H265 but I do not do that anymore. Handbrake should decide itself bitrate. I use RT 22 - 20 - Which also consumes a lot of CPU power. Is probably the filters like Denoise. I use Denoise for old movies. I only use a light filter. (Denoise NLMEANS filter) Preset Light. Tune: movie. Deinterlace: Decomb. H265 is generally a beast. After switching from H264 to H265, I thought about replacing my 7700K for the first time.

Since I've heard that Handbrake supports only 6 cores. Would a 32 Core be overkill? And not faster? According to benchmarks, a 32 core is still faster in Handbrake. With what FPS so (speed) at Handbrake I can count on a Threadripper? with the above settings. 45 FPS? Faster than Quick Sync on the 4 core 7700K?

  2. If you get 1.5 fps with i7-7700K (4C/8T) you cannot expect 45 fps with 2990WX (32C/64T), that would be 30 times faster with only 8 times more cores. Even that is unrealistic as the i7-7700K is much faster per core and threading isn't perfect. So roughly 5 to 8 fps are a more realistic ballpark? With 2950X maybe 4 to 6 fps?

Do you get electricity for free? Where I live e.g. 200W for 24h encoding would cost me ~1.3 Euro. 50 GB HDD space costs ~1.1 Euro. So 1:1 Blu-Ray copy is not only much superior in quality but also cheaper. You should at least try to find a healthy compromise. Using preset placebo is moronic.

  3. Did a short Google and it seems even my estimate for the performance increase might be much too high. x265 threading with 1080p isn't good unless you split the movie into chunks or encode several simultaneously:

    https://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/cpu_mainboard/amd_threadripper_2950x_and_2990wx_review/11

They even put 2950X ahead of the 2990WX.

8 FPS that's a joke right? So I would have imagined 25 - 40 FPS. That would automatically be 1 hour encoding time not 24 hours.... The thing with placebo is, I think I see a difference to very slow, and the file is 10 percent smaller. The worst thing is anyway H265 and filters That eats a lot. H264 is history. I'm actually really looking forward to the results from a user who owns 32 core threadripper CPU. Or because 16 core. But if it's only 8 FPS... that would be a disaster. Then I would not even upgrade. I can not believe that. 8 FPS... That would be super bad for a threadripper.

Power consumption would not be bad if I only need 1-2 hours per movie. 40 FPS would be exactly 1 hour or so. 24h Encoding time I just do not want to accept because power consumption logical. But also because it costs a lot of time, I want in 1 week already 60 Blu Rays ribs. As I said, I own almost 1,000 Blu Rays and look for the digital way. for my Apple TV 4. I Use Handbrake 7 Years....

If someone has a threadripper or Handbrake expert. please tell me. Your results with Very Slow or placebo with RF22 and H265. I need only FPS infos. So you do not need to encode a movie save you pocket, but only 1-2 seconds. And tell me Average FPS. I can calculate my own time... Via FPS. Do not want to be ignorant. But I can not believe 8 fps. I have already seen higher results. 2013 with an iMac Pro.

EDIT: To Your 2Post. Unfortunately in this benchmark an important detail is not shown. Whether handbrake encoding is set to Fast Slow or Placebo. That makes a difference Huuuuge.

But 45 FPS are excellent results. Not for the money, but for me. if the 16 core really does better. Can I save a lot of money.

Give up preset placebo and you can reach that range. Preset placebo isn't magic, you can easily make up for it with more bitrate.

This right here answers any question you may have about upgrading; if with the settings you use you get 1.5 fps using an OC 7700K then there is no point in upgrading. Assuming that you could buy a cpu that was 10x faster than your 7700K then you still would only get 15 fps and there isn't a cpu available thta's 10x faster than a 7700K.
