Daum Pot Player - Videos lack contrast compared to other players

[SOLVED] I read elsewhere on the forum that a re-install of the latest version could help with a somewhat similar issue. It did. I would still be curious to know what went/was wrong before though in case this happens in the future or if it was perhaps caused by user error (aka me).

I'm really liking Pot Player and have been using it for some time now. However, the many many many options for how to render video make it near impossible for me to figure out how to solve my problem. Instead of using words, here's an image of Pot Player (left) and VLC (right). I would like the rendering to be more like in VLC. In fact, I wouldn't mind it being even a little brighter than that even; seeing what goes on is more important to me than any "cinematic experience" or such. My preference would be for vibrant color and clear contrast.

The problem could be a number of things. It could be a limited range vs. full range video issue*, either within PotPlayer (Preferences -> Video -> Colorspaces in my old version of PotPlayer) or in the graphics driver (see the Media or Video section of the graphics setup applet). Graphic drivers often are set up with an automatic contrast stretch for video (as well as a lot other "enhancements" that ruin the video) because most people will see the darker darks and brighter brights and think it's better.

* 8 bit video is normally encoded in YUV with black at Y=16, and full white at Y=235, ie, "limited range". Computer monitors display RGB with black at 0,0,0, white at 255,255,255, "full range". So 16-235 limited range video needs to be contrast stretched to the 0-255 RGB range for proper display.
