Im struggling to get a grip on this issue, many of my DVD's are NTSC and when I rip clips from them to play on my ipad, they appear like the picture below static shots are fine but any action is "liney". I think you learned folks call it interlacing, Can you chaps advise me on how to get round this. The process I use at the moment is I rip the clip with SHRINK, then use HANDBRAKE to convert it to the iPad format. When I start HANDBRAKE I have the DEINTERLACE option ticked. Thanks for any help.

Seems that your version of Handbrake is different to mine. I do not see a 'Deinterlace' check-box.

On mine one has to go to Video/Filters and explicitly change de-interlace from 'off' to something else

    That is not deinterlaced
That looks like blended fields, of the wrong fields
Like the bottom field of one frame, and the top field of the next frame

Are you changing the frame rate ?
No need if you are only going to watch on the IPad, and not your TV

  4. It's a normal woven interlaced frame. After a simple bob:

Name:	bob.gif
Views:	249
Size:	674.7 KB
ID:	35733

The color channels are screwed up but that's most likely from the way the image was prepared. Most likely the source video is telecined film. Try Handbrake's Decomb option (you must also use the pulldown to change the method from "Off" to one of the other settings -- try "Default") and set the output frame rate to 23.976.
