I know they have the Dazzle kit that you can purchase to transfer from an older Canon xl2, BUT, can you do it with this cord?

    Thanks,

  2. FW800 is questionable for camera capture. FW400 is more reliable. If you're on a modern Mac you must use a FW800 to thunderbolt adapter.

    Thanks Smrpix,
I'm new to this and I have a Canon Xl2 Camera that I want to use to shoot a few small things.......and I'm trying to figure out the most cost effective way to go about transferring the video.

I know you can buy the Dazzle kit, BUT, I was looking into seeing if I could possibly transfer it any other ways, like directly to a External Hard Drive since I will need one of those eventually, and it costs similar to what a Dazzle kit does.

I see they have these External Video Recording systems, but for the price, I should just save up and get a new camera.......and I wan't quite ready to do so yet.

It appears as if the Dazzle kit is the best way to go.....Thanks

No, no! You want to go direct DV to DV - which is a straight data transfer -- no conversion at all. If you can plug the DV output from your dazzle into the computer then you can plug the camera into your computer directly. Which Dazzle kit do you actually mean?

    Dude,
What part of FIREWIRE are you having trouble understanding?

  7. according to this site :

The canon xl2 has a firewire 4 pin input and a 4 pin output. That would be firewire 400. Depending on what you have on your computer you would need a 4 pin to 6 pin cable or a 4 pin to 4 pin cable, firewire 400.

Or you could try this cable if you have a 9 pin firewire connector on your computer.

NO you need a firewire port in whatever computer you want to transfer the DVavi to. they are easy to put in desktops as an add in card.

  11. Firewire cards will run you $25-$30, be sure to get one compatible with your motherboard.

Usually the computer FW400 cards have a 6 pin connector and the camera has a 4 pin connector, so you want to get the correct 6pin to 4 pin cable. As I said earlier be very wary of using FW800 for video capture -- the drivers often don't exist.

(Not having a mac makes this easier -- you didn't specify initially.)
