How do I fix this for good? I've tried so many things, but I just don't get it. It has literally been over ten years and no success. For example, today, I opened a mp4 video and I could not edit a segment because of missing audio decompressor message.
Windows XP, 7, now 8.1 64 bit. Vdub 1.10.4, I assume 32bit,

Install this Virtualdub FFMpeg Input Plugin
"The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." -
Maybe you extracted to the wrong folders/version. plugins32 is for the 32bit version of VirtualDub; plugins64 is for the 64 bit version. Install only the one that corresponds to the version of VirtualDub that you have.
Check your folder structure. The file ""FFInputDriver.vdplugin or FFInputDriver_64.vdplugin" and folder "ffdlls" should be in folder "pilgins32 or plugins64" in Virtualdubs program folder.
Maybe you have something like this "<VirtualDub Program folder>\plugins32\plugins32". If you extracted the zip file to the plugins folder that's what happens.
If the problem persists, check your media file with MediaInfo to know what audio codec is being used.
EDIT: I suspect you extracted to the wrong folder, because VirtualDub ZIP file contains a plugin folder with a readme.txt file inside. I don't see this readme file in the pictures you posted. Either you deleted it or the folder is the wrong one.Last edited by Keyser; 10th Nov 2015 at 10:56.

Confused. Here is what is in the Virtual Dub folder on my desktop, then in 2nd attachment what is in plugins 32.
Still get audio decompressor message for mp4 video. Btw, downloaded Media Info portable, but cannot figure out how to work it. MP4 videos though across the board always get the audio decompressor not found. -
ALL those things, believe me, DO work. Of course, you have to install them properly.
In your attachments I don't see anywhere the contents of plugins32 folder. I continue to suspect you didn't extract the ffmpeg input driver to the correct location. I don't know what else I can tell you...
EDIT: If the first image you posted lists the contents of plugins32 folder, it should also contain folder "ffdlls", which isn't there. No wonder it doesn't work. BTW, you should clean the plugins32 folder before using the ffmpeg input driver. The plugins you have installed are, in the most part, provided with the ffmpeg input driver. Afterwards, if you need any of the plugins you have now, you can copy it again.Last edited by Keyser; 10th Nov 2015 at 12:51.

What audio codec is it looking for? AAC? MP2? MP3? Use Media Info on the MP4 and then it's pretty easy to fix that. This has helped a lot of people having the same problem. https://www.videohelp.com/software/Virtualdub-AIO

All mp4 videos prompt an audio decompressor codec missing message. Media Info portable utility is incomprehensible to me.

Now I get it. Your problem is not about MediaInfo or VirtualDub plugins. Your problem is with Windows: you don't know how to use it.
I'm afraid I can't help you there. Maybe someone else is willing to. Sorry..."The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." -
I think you are right. Once Media info was found in apps Win 8.1, this is what popped up when clicked. As I say, I give up. This is an Acer E11 111m Windows 8.1, one month old.

Open the plugins32 in windows explorer mode and copy and paste the image here.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -

I extracted this to plugins32 > Viirtualdub folder on desktop. Still no joy

Since you have AAC audio and you are missing the Audio compressor, try the ones shown in my example above. I'd also recommend the AC3 codec shown as well for future use. They are ACM type codecs used by Virtualdub. After you install them, open virtual dub and check to see if they are listed in the compression list for VirtualDub. If not, you may have to reboot.
Got it too late but your post looks like a zipped file. You will have to unzip and Read the ReadMe file ESPECIALLY the part about running in administration mode. And use the X86 version since virtual dub is probably the 32 bit version also and works better and has more plugins/filters than the 64 bit version.Last edited by Budman1; 18th Nov 2015 at 12:13.

It's called "File Explorer" not "Windows Explorer"
When dealing with windows 8 help's reduce confusion.
Start with
1: Identify system os properties (if 32 or 64bit)
Having established 32bit or 64bit ... if 32bit then
2: Locate virtualdub folder via "File Explorer"
3: If 32bit os then copy the folder "ffdls" and file "FFInputDriver.vdplugin" ... and paste into "plugins32" folder.
Note: 64bit os will load 32bit so do not panic.
You should be ready to run virtualdub with the FFInputDriver.vdplugin and load your mp4's without error.

Post 19 requires you to install the acm (read the accompanying readme file as to how) not place it in virtualdubs plugin folder
