I'm new to the forums, so please tell me if I'm not doing this right.
I have been up and down these things trying to find a solution for my problem. When I load an AVI into VirtualDub it just refuses to show any video. When I try to play it it says "No audio decompresser could be found." and when I disable the audio, I still get just a black screen! I downloaded the ffs codex and did everything that worked for other people in the forums, but I got nothing.
What is going on? Can anyone help me?

Videodub? Do you mean virtualdub?
Try identify the audio codec with mediainfo or mediainfoxp. Does it also say unknown under audio codec?
ANd I changed the thread title. -
Right, sorry. Virtualdub. It's 4 AM XD
Mediainfo says AVC for video stream and AAC for audio. -
ffdshow (configure codecs correctly - they need to have proper merit and they need to be active - quick way is press RMB in selection window and select All).
http://www.hack7mc.com/2009/02/using-ffdshow-audio-in-media-center.html -
So right click and set them all up to use the libavcodec?
Also, this is happening:
[!] AVI: Variable bitrate (VBR) audio detected. VBR audio in AVI is
non-standard and you may encounter sync errors up to 19ms when attempting
to extract WAV files or playing in some players. If this is a problem, use
Full Processing mode is recommended to decompress or recompress the audio.
(This warning can be disabled in Options, Preferences, AVI. bitrate: 192.0
± 16.4 kbps)Last edited by Aniahlator; 11th Sep 2014 at 06:53.

It still says no audio decompresser could be found, source format tag: 00ff. And when I disable audio, the error goes away, but still a black screen. I set everything to libavcodec on all three windows that came up.

What seems to have worked for others with this tag 00FF error in other post here is to install the aac/acm audio codec:
AAC ACM Codec by fccHandler
http://gral.y0.pl/~fcchandler/AACACM/index.html
I have it installed on the 32 bit version for 32 bit virtualdub and it works fine.
Also is the video black when you PLAY it with audio turned off or just initially? Many time the video will show initially black ( or green) but play fine. -
It plays as black. I'm downloading that codec now.
Audio works perfectly now, thank you so much. Video still black, even when I play the video. Ideas?Last edited by Aniahlator; 12th Sep 2014 at 03:37.

For black video
uninstall ALL version of ffdshow if you have
install x264 VFW Codec 32bit for VirtualDub 32bit
install x264 VFW Codec 64bit for VirtualDub 64bit -
Install all of fcchandler's input plug-ins and acm codecs. They can be found here...
http://sourceforge.net/projects/fcchandler/files/
Set ffdshow to use libavcodec for...
H264/AVC1, FLV1, VP3-5-6-6f-8 and VC1 (if you don't want to install Xvid or DivX you can set those to libavcodec also)
and WMV1-2-3 to use WMV9. You can do this in Virtualdub under Video > Compression or in ffdshow VFW Configuration.
Put all the input plug-ins in the appropriate Plugins folder (32 or 64) and use the installers to install the acm codecs (aac, ac3 and lame). -
Now when I play the before runs but the after frame on the right does not, and when I pause it jumps ahead to where I stopped it.

That is normal behavior. If you want to see the output frame then use the output play button. Both input and output frames should play using the output button. Virtualdub isn't meant to be a video player though and h264 can be difficult to edit. If I have trouble with mp4 then I usually remux to mkv which seems to edit a little better. h264 is meant to be the final compression and is troublesome to edit. VideoReDo TV Suite is better suited for h264 editing but is kinda pricey for a video cutter. I have luck with some h264 files that give VideoReDo problems in a free program called Free Video Editor. You have to be careful installing it though since it comes with adware.
