dvi cables and their pins

hey guys
i'm wondering why do the dvi male cables have different pin arrangement than the dvi female entrance?
im looking at a dvi-d cable and the cable doesn't seem to be right for the dvi-d female tv entrance?

There are several different types of DVI connections. DVI-I single link, DVI-I dual link, DVI-D single link, DVI-D dual link, DVI M1-DA (DVI-I dual-link plus USB), DVI-A. Look at the illustrations in the Wikipedia DVI article to figure out what the TV has.

i know what the tv has. dvi-d. my question was why don't the dvi-d cables that connect to the dvi-d connector have the same pin arrangement as the connector, or vice-versa. like, in the dvi-d cable it appears there are pins missing for the dvi-d connector.
is the dvi connector a standard to which a lot of different dvi cables connect, therefore have much more pin "slots", as to accommodate the wide array of cables?

You answered the question yourself, in the case of your TV, but not all DVI-D female connectors have 24 pin holes. Some only have 18 pin holes.
