Alright. So I've been trying to do some screen recording with x264. I've tried every single combination of settings I can think of, and yet this is what I get when I load the videos into either Sony Vegas or VirtualDub:

Please tell me how to make this stop.

  2. What program are you using to record ? Were you using x264vfw in that program ?

Does the video play ok in something like VLC, or MPCHC (ie. a "normal" video player) ?

  3. use the front end WMCapture with the x264vfw codec

a free option would be obs multiplatform. I think it uses h264 by default, but could be wrong.
edit: didn't see poison's post, he might know what he's talking about a little better.

  4. are you able to record using other codec ? It looks like a problem with wmcapture, how it' s handing off to x264vfw . But there is a small possibility that it's a playback problem so answer the other question

This happens in every capture program I use. Bandicam, CamStudio, Recordzilla, etc.

    Here are my current settings:

  6. I don't know if it will make a difference, but when I use it, I make sure to not select the virtualdub hack and i make sure to select the fast decode and it works fine in wmcapture. You can try a two minute recording for free

I tried the VDub hack only to see if it would actually help with VirtualDub so that I could convert it to another format and make Vegas happy.

I am able to record with other codecs, but XviD has syncing problems, other codecs are too big, and some other codecs still don't play nice with Vegas and VDub (like CamStudio's lossless codec).

  9. Use mod 4 frame widths and heights.

    God damn, that was it.

I was recording for the purpose of fitting multiple 853x480 videos into a single 1080 frame (without having to resize). Changing the recording area to 1280x720 fixed the issue.

    Thank you muchly!

This happens when you encode weird resolutions with x264vfw, use Lagarith instead. It's also lossless and faster.
