after tmpgenc converts it to vcd pal, video freezes after half an hour,but audio can be heard through to the end of the movie?? any help appreciated.

What kind of file is it before you convert it? If it is an AVI, try to run it through Virtual Dub Video-->Scan video stream for errors, to check it for bad frames.

thanks for your reply, vdub says its an asf file so it wouldnt touch it, so d,loaded earlier version of vdub that says, asf data chunk not found!
have just d/loaded asf tools 3.1 & that wont let me add or drag it into its data list to attempt a repair.
but as i say plays fine in media player.

Since you are able to load it into TMPGEnc, why not edit out the bad frame with Merge & Cut?

ok will give that a try, 1 other thing ive tried is loading into panasonic & it comes up with no video frames but audio is recognised.
still cant understand why media player plays it perfectly though,
