Hello all.
I have some home movie DVD vids that I just want to convert from this format to mkv with the parameters I use with Handbrake as I know these work well with my Roku player and the myPlex channel I have on it for all my other move DVD's & Blu-Rays.
But for the home movie DVD vids, they are already small enough an for other reasons longer to get into, I have no need for reducing the size of these, I just want them in the right format.
So with handbrake if I don't want to loose any of the quality...in the video tab, do I just run that Quality slider all the way to the right where I get that "Warning: RF 0 is Lossless!"
....or is that actually going to make the vid like way bigger then it even was before? As it does talk about a warning of that in the description.
In regards to that, it talks about that it can be bigger unless the original form of the vid was already Lossless.
So I took a look at it with MediaInfo an I don't know if this is where and what the proper description is for this, but in the video section there is a listing called: Compression mode, and for that on this vid is listed as Lossy.
So would assume this is along the lines of what the things are that are being mentioned in that warning and means it would be bigger?
But I don't know....I mean the vid is only 18m long and natively on the disk is barely a gig all to begin with.
So I don't know how much bigger it would be if I did this Lossless setting in Handbrake, but couldn't imagine maybe more then 3G, which is fine by me is this gives me the best quality.
Thanks for any help.

Lossless x264 will make the video much bigger because you are decompressing the MPEG 2 video (~55 GB/hr) then compressing those frames losslessly (to maybe 20 GB/hr).
Just use MMG to remux from VOB to MKV. Or Mpg2Cut2 to remux to MPG.Last edited by jagabo; 31st Aug 2013 at 09:52.

Actually I was thinking about that there must be some converter programs...but just wondering how well that conversion is going to work with my setup of the Roku/myPlex system I am using.
I am hardily knowing well enough to tell how it works well, but I have been playing with Handbrake for about two months now re-encoding all kinds of DVD's & Blu-Rays and have come to find some pretty good working settings that seem to work very well with the stuff I mentioned.
Basically I am under the impression and with my limited knowledge about things, that I am not looking to just convert, but re-encode here (?) and do so in a way that the results are sure to work my equipment.
So again not saying so much I really care how it's done, but just don't want to waist a bunch of time with things that are not going to play as well on my equipment as I know Handbrake and the settings other then this one size thing will do. -
Again, if you don't need to reduce the file size you should remux rather than convert/compress the video. Try remuxing the DVD into MPG or MKV containers. That is simply take the MPEG 2 data out of the VOB container and putting it into an MKV or MPG container. There is no loss of quality and it's very fast.
-
Ok, if its fast I could take a look at those and this option.
But just in case they do not play well with the system I am using, I would very much welcome any recommendations from any others for more towards my original question. -
I already answered your other questions.
And by the way, I've never heard of a player other than a PC that can play x264 lossless. -
Jagabo, I really didn't come here to get into something with anyone, I asked what settings and things in HandBrake for certain things, and your "answer" was to tell me not to do it all and why.
OK, I have your thoughts on this and appreciate your info, but none of that was answers to my questions an if all you want to do is get into something with someone cause that's just what you want, I am kindly asking you to go find someone else to do with. -

Jagabo, please do not post to this thread anymore, its was not made as I have nothing better to do but get into a pissing match with you and you are quickly ruing any hope of getting my questions answered.
Please look elsewhere for your issues today. -
Jagabo, I have told you twice now you are not answering my questions, and asked you twice now very politely not to post on it anymore.
If you do again, I will just forward this to the mods -
Jagabo is simply trying to keep you from wasting time making a file that won't play in your Roku. If you use a small number for the CRF in Handbrake, say 12 or 13, you will make something that is visually indistinguishable from the original unless you go frame by frame and examine it for tiny flaws. I can't see anything different at CRF 15 personally, but my eyesight isn't comparable to many. My normal settings for conversion are 19 or 20 in this control. H264 is very efficient at compression compared to the original mpeg2 of your dvd, so it may be smaller even at CRF 12 than the original.
Moving the mpeg2 video found in your original dvd over to an mkv file without conversion is very good advice. A couple of ways have been shown, but you can also do this with MakeMKV. You won't lose any quality in this, and since you aren't worried about file size, this will be very quick. Since this is a very fast process, you can try this in a test to make certain that your Roku will play mpeg2 in an mkv file. I would be very surprised if it wouldn't. -

I understand what he is doing and what he is thinking, and I have said repeatedly that is not what I am looking for.
With as well I keep asking him to no longer post about this as I did not get up today to get into an online point grudge match over this.....and as I have said...his point and recommendations have been taking so there is no point at least as far as the thread to keep going over this.
But since he is continuing to post here so even when told all this and asked politely now twice, this is a separate issue of just some issues with him
An since I have told him this and he continues to try to make a thing about it, on this point he is obviously just looking to cause trouble which overall since he knows is ruining this thread and just making trouble for me, is obviously his goal.
So as said, since I told him not to do this or I would hand this over to the mod, that's what I'll do an he can take that up with him
Thanks for ruined my attempts of trying to get my questions answer J with your issues, guess I now will just have to make a second thread and I truly hope you can not post to that one and ruin it too. -
You cannot get any better quality than what you have now. If HUGE file size with the same exact quality as what you have now is what you want, then by all means go for lossless.
VOB2MPEG will give you the exact same quality as the DVD, exact same file size as the DVD, in a MUCH more recognizable/playable "package" (.mpg). -
Do that and YOU will be the (only) one who has broken the forum rules:
Do not post the same topic on several forums.
Please do not cross post, once is enough.
https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/72386-Forum-rules-Acceptable-Use-Policy-%28AUP%29 -
Is just my take on this, but cross posting talks about making more then one post in a separate section when one is enough. Point to this rule is to not take up space when it is not needed and or create confusion.
It does not mean nor is about when trolls are being abusive (btw first statement in first list of do not rules), and certainly there is a lot of that going on here, an in doing so intentionally does things just for the point of harassment an in doing so, ruins any hope of the OP getting their questions answered.
IE, cross posting is two post's possibly getting help on, where as here, any hope for the first one has been ruined.
Anyway, have just forward this to the mods and they can decide. -
You are the one "ruining" your thread by insisting I didn't answer your questions. I answered each question in your original post. I even quoted the questions in your original post and my answers to them. I asked you to point out what questions weren't answered so I could address them. But you never responded other than to say I didn't answer any of your questions.
When I originally responded to your first post I only suggested a remux. I added more about x264 lossless conversions a few minutes later after making some calculations. Maybe you caught my reply between my original response and the update. -

Besides answering your question (btw, can you ask that question again that was not answered?), there is no trolling involved in this thread, you do not need lossless AT ALL if it is not mentioned for some intermediate work like color correction, filtering in different applications.
Lossless conversion will not make your footage better than that mpeg2 original.
If that lossless you are making is directed just for viewing it is waste of time.
If that lossles you are making is just directed to one application it is waste of time.
If that losslless is directed for TWO aplications, the first conversion you just make is waste of time, because that first aplication might as well read original. -
I decide that you should try makemkv and see how that mkv works on your roku. Lossless and a mkv.
If you really want to use handbrake then read kerrys post. -
For the last time and just to set the record straight, as it is written "right in the title", what I was mainly asking for was, what settings do I use for lossless conversion in handbrake.
I did not ask, should I use handbrake for lossless, what other should I use instead of Handbrake, will using anything else or anything else give me better results, is Handbrake what I should not use and why, and or this that or anything other then what is written which was...what settings would I use to do a lossless conversion in "HandBrake"
I mean, can anyone copy a part of my OP that asked any of those other questions or anything that even hinted that I wanted to discuss anything other then what settings in "HandBrake" to use?
Instead I got a reply to not use handbrake and why and I said my thanks for that but stated, I was looking to discuss settings in "HandBrake" for lossless.
But someone could not let that go and despite repeatedly being told that, took it upon themselves to turn this thread into a personal pissing match over "that" and what they were telling me is what I should do.
And continued to do it, and continued to do it, and continued to do it no matter how many times I told them this was not helping, or what I wanted, and most of all too, to please stop this.
"THAT" pissing match as it would not be let go then completely destroyed the point of this post (which was probably the point of this effort, or at least a lack of concern of) as now it "is" a big pissing match over something completely different and in no way am I going to get my questions answered now.
Not much different then if there was a puke flavored ice cream at a store and I walked in an asked for that, and was told by the guy behind the counter, no you don't want that, you want vanilla, vanilla is better, everyone else likes vanilla and I like it and think its what you should have so I don't care what you want or are asking for, I am going to give you vanilla and that is that.
An even if you try to get the other person working here to give you puke flavored ice cream, or even call the manager, I still don't care puke flavors ice cream is gross and I hate it and I will continue to badger you that you should take vanilla and hopefully to the point where you are going to leave the store and get nothing as this way I know for sure at least you will not get the puke flavored ice cream you wanted.
And in post board terms that is one part of trolling, which is doing what you can to create such a mess in a thread over what they want, as to get what they want.
Simply put, if a person tells you, thank you but that is not what I'm looking for and if anyone else can give that to you....you move on, you don't just keep badgering a thread and a poster over your point over and over again.
You don't know everything about why that person is asking what their asking or tons of other reasons why they might be saying that, but I think its fair to say the person asking does, so if they tell you you're not answering things and also destroying any point of them actually getting what they want, you just move on and don't make a personal vendetta over it to the point you just trash a thread.
...but if you do that.....that is trolling.Last edited by WBFAir; 31st Aug 2013 at 14:07.

The OWNER of videohelp.com(Baldrick) here:

didn't mention anything about trolling or reprimanding anyone for their actions in this thread.
I suggest you move along with your experiments with HandBrake or try another of the many helpful suggestions that were given to you. -
The only lossless method in Handbrake is to reencode with x264 at CRF=0*. That's useless as far as your MPEG 2 source is concerned because the resulting file will be much larger than your source and will not play on your Roku.
* You also have to be careful not to crop, resize, deinterlace, etc. But you did not ask about any of that in your original post. And given that x264 lossless was otherwise not useful to you I didn't see any reason to mention it. -

I have already told the best method. End of trolling.
-
So just who is trolling, are you saying by my trying to defend against trolling in my thread....I am trolling?

if you had read the first replay carefully you would have figured out that cfr0(lossless) conversion of your 1GB vob would end up with file size of about 16GB. the rest that followed was a polite attempt to get you to realize that would be a great waste of hard drive space and to suggest alternatives. you were treated with kid gloves. if you wish to make use of the vast amount of knowledge available here i would advise growing a thicker skin. if you piss off the long time helpers here you won't get the best answers.
not to jump on the use something else bandwagon too hard, but you might like vidcoder which is a frontend gui for handbrake. it makes repetitive use easier with presets you can modify and save once you find what you like.--

If you set lossless to zero, it doesn't work? Otherwise I quite don't get all this.
Profile must be set to High 4:4:4 if it doesn't get set by handbrake automatically.
