I've seen this before but I don't know what it is. I suspect it's related to interlaced video, but I thought it would be good to get the help of more experienced folk. The lines on the girls face and at the edge of her clothes are not in the source VHS video.

    What say you?

tv = no interlace (that is, you do't see it)
pc/lcd/monitor, progressive (that is, you will see it)

  3. Interlace comb artifacts. Because the frame contains two half pictures taken at different times:

Is that something I will have to live with, or is it fixable?

So are you saying that when I create a DVD and play it on a TV, the lines won't be visible?

That is correct. If you handle it properly. Before broadcast when digital, all TV content was interlaced. Even with digital broadcast a large portion is still interlaced.

Don't crop the bad parts off like you did in your example image. Mask them if you feel it necessary.

Thanks... yeah, I was planning on setting up a mask for the noise at the bottom of the screen. But the image is cropped simply because I used a screen print and I did a quick crop to post it here.

Are you suggesting that in order to preserve fields? And/or another reason?

    Thanks,
    Francois

Never mind about the interlacing (which you should preserve if going to DVD), the video levels are completely wrong. The bright parts are all bleached to white.

And because there are good reasons to keep it at 720x480.

The capped vid is 720x480. Only the posted image is cropped.

Yes, I was so focused on interlace artifacts that I wasn't paying attention to the coloring... and I haven't processed any of the capture AVIs yet.

You already said that about the image resolution. I was just responding to the direct question asked of me.

If the TV is running in interlaced mode (480i, 720i, 1080i) they won't be visible. In progressive mode (480p, 720p or 1080p) mode they might still be visible unless there is an algorithm in the TV that auto-corrects interlace artifacts.

Every progressive TV has the ability to deinterlace interlaced inputs.
