    I saw interlacing so I started putting them through QTGMC but I just noticed all the episodes after this one are fully progressive. After a closer look I've decided that it's supposed to be progressive but has been converted to PAL using field-drop. Please give me a solution so I don't have to think about it!

  2. This seems to work pretty well:

    Code:
    Mpeg2Source("Sample.d2v")
    AssumeTFF()
    QTGMC(preset="fast")
    TDecimate(mode=2, rate=23.976)
    You might have to tweak the frame rate a bit.

    SetMemoryMax(768)
    SetMTMode(5,6)
    MPEG2Source("Video 1.d2v")
    SetMTMode(2)
    QTGMC(Preset="Placebo", EdiThreads=2)
    SelectEven()
    Spline144Resize(1024, 576)
    EEDI3()
    I have to remind myself that all DVDs are designed to be deinterlaced regardless of their original Scan Type and the fault is in fact mine for trying to use it in a way it was never intended for.

    If I want to encode these episodes in their ultimate forms is there anything better I can do than this?

  5. Look for long smooth panning shots. Watch for duplicate or missing frames. That will tell you if you have the right frame rate.

    I'm new to this and I've spent most of the last few months encoding Doctor Who which was fairly simple so I'm having to think these other side jobs I'm doing in between through.

    I don't know what TDecimate is. If this was originally 30p and it was reduced to 25i through field dropping that would mean that there would still be remnants of all 30 frames within the fields. How smart is it ie. If I run it through TDecimate for a framerate of 29.97 would it find those frames and remove all the others?

    I'm not going to download your file, but if you tell us WHAT it is, there's a good chance that someone here by name alone can tell you whether it's 24p or not. The more info you provide, the better. For example, saying it's season 3 of blah blah is better than just saying it's blah blah.

    OK then, it's Ben 10: Ultimate Alien. To Muddy the waters I've noticed on the progressive episodes that small movements seems to occur every second frame and large movements every frame which makes it hard to see what's going on. I'm trying to watch them frame by frame right now to find out more but VLC's frame by frame button keeps freezing. Possibly because I have two encodes running in the background (including the later episodes) using 100% of the CPU or maybe VLC just sucks but it's making things difficult.

  9. Typically, panning shots are at 24 fps, character animation at 12 fps.

    Wow, you may be right. The quasi interlaced episodes are all about 22 minutes 30 seconds long, while the progressive episodes are all around 21 minutes 30 seconds long, which could suggest they've been sped up. Which would mean the early episodes were either 24p with pulldown converted to PAL somehow or 24p with one field added after every 12. *sigh* I'll have to start counting when I can get VLC working properly.
