Hi Guys, Need a bit of help with the options I have with a Sony DCR – HC14E camcorder, with a defective tape mechanism, ( tape is not installing properly). Can I use this cam to record direct to a computer HDD without a tape installed? Can I hook up this cam to the TV and use a VCR to record? Can I use this cam as a webcam? Just thought, would check out my options before writing this cam off. Any helpful suggestions welcomed. I would have a go at fixing it but I would not know where to start.

I checked the manual; it isn't clear if there is live passthrough of the DV/1394/iLink digital data when in Camera mode (vs. Playback/VCR mode), but I would think NOT, since there is no indicator at all about that kind of possibility mentioned. You might be able to use live passthrough via the Composite Video+Audio cables (also iffy), but the quality will be reduced anyway (simple analog, similar to what a VHS cam would give).

IIWY, I'd "write this cam off" and find a replacement on ebay, etc.

i think he's looking to record live DV video, not a/d pass-through. it should be able to do it. hook it up like you're going to capture a tape over firewire, put it in record mode. when the picture is on the cam screen start winDV, click capture.

Not sure on this particular model but most Sony camcorders output direct over firewire (and composite) while recording or in standby. I've used one as a webcam in the past. However, if the camera is in standby it will go to sleep after about 10 minutes unless you leave the tape mechanism open.

I'm not sure about the OP's model, but if you remove the cassette beforehand the DCR-TRV330 I have stays on.
