Well, the good news is I didn't get those previous errors. But now it says (inside the screen area) 'MISSING CODEC'

I did a MKV rip. What sort of codec do I need, and how to have VD recognize it?
According to another media player, the file is: MPEG2(libmpeg2.dll)

The file plays perfectly fine in other players, so I must already have it installed??

Unless it's asking for a audio codec? If that's the case, the file is: AC3(Dolby Digital)-liba52.dll

 Thanks,

A mkv from a DVD? Most program will have problems with that. But you could try http://gral.y0.pl/~fcchandler/Plugins/MPEG2/index.html

 Or try avidemux.

Or don't convert your dvd to mkv, instead rip with dvdfab decrypter, use vob2mpg and edit the mpg instead.

Not necessarily. Some players have their own codecs that are internal to the player and other applications can't use them. But I just point this out as a possibility, although I think that it's most likely not your problem. I would blame Win 8. I work in IT for a living and we regard early adopters of the latest Microsoft release as suckers. "My program doesn't work any more!" is a very common complaint when EVERY new version of Windows gets released. This is why I refuse to ever upgrade Windows until maybe the first service pack for the new version is released. Maybe. Win 7 is pretty good in my opinion and I personally see no reason to spend any money at all to upgrade to Win 8. I hate to tell you, but I think the odds are pretty good that you've got some kind of Win 8 specific issue and you're just going to have to wait until the VirtualDub people can get around to fixing it.
