I converted mkv and vob files to avi with second audio stream using avidemux and on the computer it works all right (vlc) but my samsung tv recognises only the first audio stream. is it a problem of encoding or is it simply that samsung accepts only one stream per avi-flie (i.e. no use experimenting further)?

TV media players have a lot of limitations so likely it only supports one audio stream in an AVI file. It's not unusual for AVI support to only be for one audio stream in the file. Perhaps Baldrick's suggestion of MP4 will be better or maybe MKV (if the player supports it) support will be for more than 1 audio stream.
