When I try to play an avi from USB on my stand alone bluray LG BD 350 I get this message "video size bigger than 720x576". I googled a couple of treads with similar issues but do not understand. Should be able to reduce the size. ?
The avi file size is 1.7GB
Any help much appreciated

avi is a general name for a container. it can have lots of different types of video in it. install the free mediainfo, set it to text mode, and open your avi with it. copy/paste the complete text mode results here.

Your video has a resolution too large for what your player supports. You will have to re-encode to get it to a smaller resolution. Install MediaInfo as suggested so we can understand what you really have and then we can suggest the easiest way to re-encode it.
By the way, the "video size" in the message has nothing to do with file size. LG really should have used the term "resolution" instead in the message. -
okm thanks both here it is

No need to re-encode,just change the 4cc to xvid. The 4cc changer is included in the xvid when you install the codecs. If it cant play it due to the packed bitstream then it needs to be re-encoded.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
Also you can use MPEG4 Modifier to remove the packed bitstream if its an issue.

where do i do that?
Replace the DX50 with XVID and see if it will play on your LG player. Else you'll need to re-encode.
Tried changing res on player but it made no difference -
This is not correct. You can unpack bitstreams on AVI files without re-encoding. MPEG4 Modifier in our tools section can do this.

What do you mean exactly by that statement? Your previous posts have indicated that you are not very experienced and I have a feeling that you are incorrectly describing what you did. If you just pushed a Zoom button on your remote or changed between 4:3 and 16:9 then you really do not understand what needs to be done and how to do it.

hehe. next time don't download an avi. make sure it's mp4.

True I am not very experienced. But I did not just press zoom. On the remote there is a resolution button. By going into set up you can change the res
Go to the second link down here headed BD350 / BD355 - LG Electronics and open the pdf to page 15 and 16 -

avi usually works fine for me.
As been suggeted this easiest way to fix this is to change the 4cc from DX50 to XVID as these are (almost) identical encodings and your player support higher reolution for Xvid than for Divx. If this fails to work you'll have to rencode the video. -

In a sense, the "zoom button" and "resolution button" are the same thing.
Files come in at different resolution settings, and for your machine there are certain limits. For files encoded with one of the DivX codecs, that maximum allowable/supported input resolution is SD (720x576), whereas with most all the other codecs the maximum is HD (1920x1080). This you cannot change.
The only thing you can change is:
1. Whether your device considers it Xvid vs DivX when it reads the file (this is what that fourcc changer would assist with) .
2. What kind of file is encoded (by re-encoding, if necessary).
3. The output size sent to the TV/display (this is the "resolution" or "zoom" button).
Note that with that last one, you might be "blowing up" the size from SD to HD, but the quality will ALWAYS be SD.
My suggestion to you about the use of the resolution button: if it is SD material, set the button to 576p, if it is HD material, set it to 1080p. It probably won't LOOK like it is making any difference (particularly if your TV is set to "Auto" resize).

Have you had any results from trying the AVIC fourcc changer yet?

Thanks. Very informative

The reason any change you tried has given you the same message is that you are NOT actually changing the resolution of the source video file by pushing ANY button on your remote. As Cornucopia points out, it's basically a confusing label for "zoom". And your refusal to accept the reality that your SOURCE video is the one that MUST change and that this change CANNOT be done via your TV or your BD player is not helping matters. You have no choice but you must copy the video to a PC and make a change to it there or you will continue to have failure.
You've been told what to do. It's up to you now. -

-
But playing it ok in VLC doesn't correct it to where you can see it with your BD player & TV, and VLC has no such restrictions on resolution per codec, so it's not a good reference regarding BD playability.
Fix the source first.
(In that list of things to change, #3 was not meant as an solution option instead/prior of trying #1 and/or #2).
