    Windows 7
I've got an .mkv that use to work just fine but now crashes if the mouse is held over it. It did crash everytime I opened the folder until I changed the folder properties from video to general. Now it just crashes if the mouse is over it, I had this trouble before and used move on boot to move it to another folder which worked then but is not working now.
It all just gives me then error that windows exlorer has crashed and windows is restarting explorer.
I have a few other files that do this, all video files not all mkv. I use VLC.

I have exactly the same problem but with MP4 files and no I don't have any codec packs installed other than ffdshow. To the bests of my knowledge it started to happen after I tried out TSDoctor, long since uninstalled and the registry cleaned and checked as well. On Windows sites this is not an unusual event. Doesn't matter if I have icons or text. The only way I can even delete a mp4 files is to open a program like Womble and select the file and delete within the womble file selector (right click----> delete) or any other program except Windows Explorer. No virus, malware, rootkits etc. My work around until I find a solution is using mkvmergegui import the mp4's and wrap them in a mkv container. God help me if it decides to reject MKV files as the OP is experiencing....

Try disabling the "Thumbnail Preview" feature --- which is a resource hog BTW.

Yes I have done that and in-fact that was the first thing I tried. The question remains why only mp4 files cause a problem (or MKV in the case of the OP) when all other video file types don't? All merrily providing thumbnail previews without a hitch?

Changing visual settings to best performance makes it not crash.

problem lies with the splitter and it's corporation windows explorer,...

I don't have any codec packs installed other than ffdshow. .. the bests of my knowledge it started to happen after I tried out TSDoctor, long since uninstalled and the registry cleaned and checked as well.
-> tsdoctor probably installed Haali Media Splitter
    a. deinstall it and install a splitter that does not provide thumbnails to the os
    b. deactivate thumbnail support in the splitter configuration
    c. try to get it working with Haali and your Windows system, there should be plenty of threads regarding:
Haali Media Splitter Thumbnails Windows 7
if you search for it through i.e. google,..

Actually add all the above that I have tried to no avail - Haali thumbnails has always been turned off.

Everything was ok until shortly after I installed and uninstalled TSDoctor or maybe that's when I noticed the phenomena with mp4 files. An interesting sidenote when I was running the Beta version of Windows 7 the same thing happened with MOD files - since that time a new hard disk with a (purchased) Windows t Ultimate 32 bit version is my current OS.

My mp4 files are a collection of my own using Handbrake to make and the odd download - makes no difference----> hover crash!

Sounds like another program/file that got installed with tsdoctor is using windows thumbnail preview for mp4.

If Haali was causing the crash then using a different MKV reader/splitter would fix the problem.

You already said that. I was answering the question about why I suggested it. When you hover over a file Windows may open it to get details about what's inside.

    I'm sorry.
    hovering causes the crash

  19. You could try using GraphEdt or GraphStudio, or GSpot to render the file and see what filters are used.

Well something has happened and my system no longer crashes when I hover on a mp4 file.

I first had a look at the config for Haali and notning was amiss ie thumbnails were unticked. I decided to tick that box and then untick and hit apply and OK.
Next I went to CP/System/advanced system settings and under performance settings noted the box ticked was custom. I ticked let windows decide. Note nothing changed as far as the ticked boxes option - once again apply and ok.

Problem went away. I can only think I had a couple of corrupted ini files, if there are any associated with these settings? Keeping my fingers crossed. So reiterating I still have and use Haali, ffdshow. I hope the OP with his mkv problem can sort it out. It's only taken me about 3 months to sort my problem out

To disable thumbnails, control Shell Extensions and context menus use this app:
