Is it possible to save video in VirtualDub in other format, besides .avi?
For example, can I save a video in .mp4 editing it in VirtualDub?
If not, why they do not write such a "filter"?
Why the creator of the soft (as far as I know Avery Lee) made it to save only .avi?
What is the advantage of .avi?

Yes, it's possible. But it's a bit of a pain. Look into the external encoder feature:

VirtualDub is built around VFW which makes AVI support easy. For more than that you'll have to ask Avery Lee.
