I've been beating my head up against this issue for quite a long time now... perhaps someone can help me?
this is the procedure I follow (for XVCD or XSVCD - VBR encoding):
1) SmartRipper
2) DVD2AVI
3) TMpegEnc
4) Nero Burning Rom
nearly every XVCD that I have burned has had video skipping problems... I've also tried XSVCD encoding (VBR), however, because of those mixed stream type DVDs (NTSCFilm), I've experienced jumpy picture in certain parts of the XSVCD... I've been trying to figure out the real causes and a solution for these problems but, I have been unsuccessful thus far... so, my questions are as follows:
a) should I not be burning at 32x speeds?
b) how should I handle the mixed stream type (both interlaced and progressive scan) DVDs?
I'm wide open for suggestions...
thanx!!!

personally i would cut it apart and convert all the interlaced to progressive and then re-assemble ... but that is just me ..

I love posts like this. It's like: What would you do to stop world hunger?personally i would cut it apart and convert all the interlaced to progressive and then re-assemble ... but that is just me ..

Well, personally, I would feed everybody, but that's just me.

Anyways, let me actually contribute something here and say: DON'T BURN AT 32X!! ARE YOU MAD?!? From what I understand, you should not burn much higher than 4x or 8x. That being said, you may want to try a slower burn speed and get back to us. That might be your only problem, especially if your MPEG files play fine before being burned to VCD.

What you can try is to make different sort of svcd and vcd.
 Also burn normal vcd svcd
burn vcd svcd with higher bautrate
burn with slower speed and higher speed
 Buy cd-rw to test

Maybe your dvd player can read as fast as it has to, the bautrate is to high for your dvd player
If you copy the film to your pc and play it there wahat happens then
Just try a lot of things, then every dvd player is different
 Maybe bad cdr's
Could be anything, you have to test.

the same thing happens at 4x (shaky pic)... I have an Apex AD660...Anyways, let me actually contribute something here and say: DON'T BURN AT 32X!! ARE YOU MAD?!? I am using Memorex (up to 32x) CDRs... it has to be in the encoding... *shrugs* I don't think TMpegEnc likes me...

ignoring the retort from the, i guess, hungery guy. have you tried reversing the field order in tmpgec? also - as i mentioned treating each type of the parts as seperate and encode them seperate - then combine them together after encode will greatly improve your quality not withstanding that there maybe another reason for the jumping ..
if you save your tmpgec template that you are using (if different than a standard one) and send it to me - i will look at it for you ..

i use the default VCD template in TMpegEnc, then unlock and change the bitrate according to the "FitCD" bitrate calculator... i'm convinced that the problem lies in the mixed stream type DVDs (NTSCFilm)... i don't have the time nor the patience to cut and paste and convert it all to progressive scan... i've tried slower burn speeds, different brand media and all other kinds of stuff but always the same problem... the frames skip ahead... it's unwatchable...
