Remove black lines from movie

As above,

I watch avi/divx files through my ps3 on a wide screen tv

some of them have the black bar across the top and bottom of the screen,whilst others do not.

i am guessing this is all to do with the resolution

i also use fairuse wizard often for conversion,is there a setting that i can use to blow the movies to fit the tv screen?

my ps3 will upscale some files but others are either zoomed in too far,or to small.

also can i edit my existing avi/divx files to fit to full screen?

Totally normal. They were intended by the director to be shown in that aspect ratio.

If you only want to watch 16:9 aspect ratio, stick to TV broadcasts or HBO crops.

Are you forgetting 1.66:1 films? They were quite common, especially in Europe. And 1.85:1 isn't a whole lot wider than 1.78:1. And there are even a few 1.78:1 films.

Mostlty they were using pre war equipment (production and projection) with low expectation for world cinema distribution. I should have said 1960s. Hollywood and later Bollywood went wider and wider. ~2.35 to 1 became average.

Japan's NHK and MIT agreed HDTV should be 1.78 to 1 (16:9) in the late 1970s. That wasn't going to influence Hollywood to narrow their work.

But yes, the great majority are wider than 16:9.
