  1. I've been using EasyCap for awhile now and want to to upgrade to something to record my Wii and Xbox 360 at the best quality. The dilemma is I have no method to set up a TV in the same room as my computer. So I need to able to capture and play on my monitor. For my easycap i use honestech VHS to DVD to record but I want something that can capture 480p and/or 720p. However most higher-quality capture software I have seen has a delay between my input and seeing it onscreen. What would be the best device+software combination to record at progressive quality? Any help or advice will be appreciated.

    My computer specs are:
    Vista Home Premium
    Intel Core 2 2.13Ghz
    4GB RAM

Take a look at the 'Capture Cards' list to the left of where you read this.

Enter your options and you will arrive at the Black Magic Intensity Pro. A sniff at a mere $250.

Personally I'd recommend a hauppauge hd pvr - though it is component only and dolby digital only (will do 5.1 via fiber optic but not dts).

Its a usb box that you connect externally to your computer by the way.

  4. Black Magic is currently way out of my budget. I've looked into HD PVR before. Theres up to 4 seconds delay between input and display on the monitor. I do not have a TV I can set up in the same room as computer. What I am looking for is an HDMI or component capture card that I can record with but without any delay while recording. I can deal with audio delay but since I'm recording game consoles I can't allow any video delay.

The problem is that 'good' and 'cheap' rarely go together.

Yet a 'good' capture device should not have any delay that you describe unless you are filtering the feed through other devices.

Then could you possibly give some examples and/or alternatives to blackmagic? It would be nice to know what names to look for or at least average price range for such devices.

Never heard of a zero delay encoding capture card.

Step one, replace computer monitor with an LCD-TV (HDMI or component in).

Step two, loop the input component/HDMI to the monitor.

Step three, after starting the capture, switch the monitor to the game loop.

Like I already said, most current cards are discussed ......

    <<<<<<< Here

But you will see that for HD you can expect to pay from $200 to $1000 (these are RRPs so you will find them a little cheaper). If you find cheaper then do advise.

That's the ideal setup but unfortunately not possible in my circumstances. I have no place for a TV in my computers room and nowhere to set up computer near my TV. The only way I will be able to do that is if I buy a borrow laptop. Delay most often has to do with software being used to capture. For example Trying to use Pinnacle Studio with my easycap will give me delay whereas honestech vhs to dvd will not. My primary concern is a way capture 480p/720p video with minimal delay

He's suggesting use an HDTV as your computer monitor. One that supports both DVI/HDMI (a 1080p TV with pixel-for-pixel mapping) and component input. Then you can use the Hauppauge HD PVR's component passthough (no delay) to play the game while capturing.

Yeah, what inputs are available on your monitor?

DB83, there is another HDMI capture card that's cheaper, the AVerTV HD DVR. But I don't think that or the BM card really apply in OP's case since it looks like he has an older dual-core.

    jargus,

With so many constraints, your expectations are too high. What is your actual budget? $10US? $200US? What is your desired destination? Email to friends? Web streaming? Youtube? Distance from console to computer? What is your monitor? (Looking for number and types of input).
    Have a good one,

Budget is currently about $100. I mainly plan on uploading to youtube and occasionally streaming. The console is directly below computer desk. Monitor se198wfp with dvi and vga input

You won't be able to get Wii captures from that, hdmi only. You'll need an analog to digital converter... not cheap.

You need something with component (Wii 480p) and HDMI (360 720p).

  16. It has analog inputs: composite, s-video, and component. One of the connectors that looks like HDMI isn't HDMI, it's for a pigtail adapter. From the description at Amazon:

It’s equipped with HDMI and through the included dongle cable, Component, S-Video and Composite Video

"Noticeable" lag is the key word in that review. Someone actually measured it here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=18394593#post18394593

Depends what games you're playing. It's enough to feel when playing Rock Band. Not noticeable going through menus. Haven't yet tried playing other games through it.
