  1. Hey guys, I need help to convert .MKVs to MPEG. I used Total Video Converter to convert 450MB file to mpeg and it showed 2 hours ETA. Does anyone know any fast software or method to do it? MY HDTV only support MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 so that's why, Thanks!

    Regards,

Encoding speed is, first and foremost, tied to your CPU and how well the encoder utilises it. Fill in your computer specs so we know what sort of PC you are working with.

ConvertXtoDVD is one of the fastest encoders around, but only outputs a DVD structure. You can then use VOB2MPG to get an mpg file.

  3. I used MKV2VOB. HDTV specs say that files which are encoded with MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 can be run only so its mean whether its MKV or AVI it just should be encoded mpeg or its should .mpg extension?

By the way, my PC specs are :

    Pentium 4 3.2 GHZ

    1.5 GB RAM

It's not so much the filesize, but the length in time, and also the resolution.

If your MKV has 60 minutes running time, that's not too bad.

MPEG video encoders can be one pass, or multi-pass.
Each pass takes about the same time.
With my setup, each pass is between 1.5 and 2x the running time, using HCEnc.
My PC is rather old, so you should do better.

A two-pass encode lets you choose exactly how big the file will be.

If I don't really care, I use one-pass mode ("constant quality"), as when I want to make a DVD-RW, watch it once.
I don't know how Total Video Converter works, but I guess it's two pass.
