Intensity Shuttle Problem.

Yep I only ever opened USB 3.0 Desktop its ridiculous they even have those other files on there, except for media express they have absolutely nothing to do with the shuttle. I still haven't heard back from them either. And I don't know what Kristian Lam is on about after the first time it didn't work I downloaded the same driver back, its 7.7.1.0 just like on the disk. So it works but I get no sound and the media express window will not compact now its so big I cant even see then entire program at all. I'm seriously thinking about reinstalling my windows just to get this thing to work that's how desperate I'm getting.

I just want to make sure everyone's on the 7.7.1 driver as some of the early shipment of Intensity Shuttle ship with 7.7.0. We ship a single CD with drivers for all our other products, that's why you'll find other installers on the CD. Just install the one you need and ignore the others.

Media Express is designed to work in a 1920x1200 or 1280x800 screen so if you screen is smaller than 1920x1200, change the size of the interface from the menu bar.

Did you enable the audio channels you want to capture by clicking on the numbers above each audio channel?

Yes both audio channels are highlighted (picture above) I have my resolution at 1080p on my pc but it works if I have windows classic theme on not one of my custom ones I have full picture and audio on my AV channel on my television running through the shuttle but no audio on my pc or in captures Ive taken.

Ok I have seen my mistake and come back to edit this ... You can't have audio on play back unless you are still on the av channel your 360 is on I have been trying it through my pc on playback but as soon as i clicked playback on my av channel i could hear all audio from the capture I just didnt realize that was necessary.

Remember to uninstall any existing Intensity Shuttle driver before installing the new version.

will you ever update driver/firmware so that we can use the intensity shuttle even with USB 3.0 with other chipsets? I know the bandwidth is the problem but why don't you support smaller resolutions like AJA do with their "IO Express"?
That would be wonderfull.

Otherwise I consider to buy another capture solution because I need to have a HD Capture device solution for my PC Laptop. I want to use the capture device as input for custom software. Wouldn't mind to buy a new Laptop but the Envy is a consumer Laptop and seems to be no good as it has serious heating problems (several ppl had damages due to heating) so it's no good recommondation IMHO.


It's funny right now there is no real Laptop solution to do live video input in HD on a Laptop:

Matrox MXO2:
Works with Expresscard but cannot be used as a capture device in Windows (lack of drivers: no directshow filter, no WMP)
On Mac it does work but not with the current 15 inch MacBook Pro as that has no Expresscard slot.

+ works on MAC/PC
- but offers no capture device support for Windows
- no SDK

Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle:
Does work with Envy 15 from HP but I can't order it right now in Germany and as I said before there seems to be serious heating problems which make the system quiet unstable.
Apparently the Capture Device driver for Windows does not work yet either.

+ Directshow support
+ SDK available
- nearly no support for current Laptops. Just ENVY 15 is supported (which you can't get in Germany. HP says they will never sell this Germany - funny isn't it??!?)
- still lot of problems with the driver


AJA IO Express:
Seems to work with Expresscard (still limited HD) Havn't tested yet. Just have the MXO2 and the Intensity Shuttle here.

7.7.1 is the only version I have ever used -- I never even bothered with the drivers on the CD that came with the Shuttle.

The problem I am having and many folks are posing here is that the "Decklink Video Capture" device does not work. Pretty much most programs outside of Media Express require this to use the Shuttle as a video source. One such application is LiveKey, which says "Can't create Decklink Video Capture filter" when you try to launch it. So far I have yet to hear of anyone being able to sucessfully run LiveKey without getting this error. It carries over to other apps, like the Flash Media Encoder -- when I try selecting "Decklink Video Capture" as the video source, it says "Problem with this video device. Please verify that the video capture device is working correctly and is not already in use."

The Shuttle appears to be working flawlessly in Media Express, which leads me to believe the problem is software/driver related with the "Decklink Video Capture" device. When I try using FME the Shuttle is not in use by anything that I can tell -- I have all programs closed including Media Express.

I have the shuttle working fine now a few things that weren't in the instructions had to worked out with trail and error mainly error on my part. One thing I have noticed is I can run Media express in 1920x1080 res only if I use the windows classic theme as soon as I try my custom theme the program goes out of proportion nothing major just a little annoying

My friend got his today and he was able to use VHMultiCam with it. Interesting. Our computers are almost the same except his USB 3.0 ports are built into his motherboard.

If I hooked the camera up to my HDTV's HDMI input, the picture would display just fine. So then I went into the camera's settings and selected 1080i, and the "1080i 59.94" in Media Express worked.

Really though I am content with 1080i -- the only thing I really care about is streaming with Flash Media Encoder. But its not just FME that wont work -- the "Decklink Video Capture" video source does not work with ANY program. The only program that will show video is Media Express, which I'm guessing accesses the video from the Shuttle in some other way than the "Decklink Video Capture" other programs must use. I have another video surveillance program called PTZCam that gives pretty much an identical error as FME when I try selecting the "Decklink Video Capture" source.

wow the fact that it doesn't work with Flash Media Encoder is a deal breaker for me. I wanted to be able to stream in 720p while playing in 1080p. really is no reason for me to bother with the shuttle until that is fixed.

It's funny right now there is no real Laptop solution to do live video input in HD on a Laptop:

Matrox MXO2:
Works with Expresscard but cannot be used as a capture device in Windows (lack of drivers: no directshow filter, no WMP)

I recently recieved two of the Shuttles, one for work, Universal Studios Florida, and one for my home studio.
I don't have a raid array to test the 10 bit uncompressed, but I have tested all inputs and outputs with the Motion JPEG format and have been sucsessful.
HDMI in was the hardest to get working. The capture settings has to be the same resolution and frame rate as the source settings, unlesss you are using the upconvert option in the control panel. For example, if your trying to capture from an HDV 1080i camera imager, set it for 1080i 59.94.
The upconverter is pretty good with this device. I captured from a SD dvd player composite out, set to upconvert to 1080i in the control panel, set Media Express preferences to 1080i 59.94 and it gives me a good quality video, not as good as real HD but better than SD.
I also tried it on my laptop w/ express slot adapter and got the same errors as you all, not enough bandwidth, install failed.
I read somewhere the HP envy 15 is compatible, but I also read that no laptops are compatible yet for this device.
DPX files, That is a Frame sequence,(Image sequence) not a video stream. It is used by highend video servers like DVS.

We us them in several atractions at work. It's basiclly a folder full of pictures, .dpx, .tga files.
Sony Vegas 9 supports the .dpx file format. I am one of the Sony Vegas forum leaders at Creativecow forums.
I only got the shuttles less than a week ago, and will continue posting my findings on the Creativecow Blackmagic forum.

Apparently the HP Envy 15 does support the shuttle. That's what blackmagic says. But they did not mention that there are two versions of the HP Envy 15. One is called 1090xx and the other one is 1100. Just the 1100 seems to have USB 3.0. Therefore don't buy the one 1090! It is also very important to know that the Envy 15 1100 does not get sold in Germany (don't know about other countries). In the US you can get it. But still it seems to have serious problems with heating and I have read a lot of postings from users complaining about crashes due to overheating.

We will fix this in the next driver update but this can be manually registered via the command line. I'm don't have access to a Windows machine right now but if you navigate to the location of the Blackmagic Desktop Video directory within Program Files, you should see 2 files

1) decklink.dll
2) decklink64.dll

Type "regsvr32 decklink.dll" <enter>
Type "regsvr32 decklink64.dll" <enter>

That will manually register the filters. Restart FME if it was open when you typed the commands and you should be good to go.

As for 1080p60 support. It was never an advertised feature but the hardware is definitely capable of support that frame rate. However, current USB 3.0 implementation on the computers have not realised the full bandwidth promised by SuperSpeed USB 3.0 which is why we've not advertised support for 1080p60, only up to 1080p30. However, once they overcome this limitation, Intensity Shuttle will be able to support 1080p60.

The Envy is only recommended for use with the Pocket UltraScope which is another USB 3.0 device.

We found that the Envy 15" model with USB 3.0 has enough bandwidth for captures but not so reliable for playback. As UltraScope is used only in capture mode, the Envy 15 is fine with it. We do not currently recommend it for Intensity Shuttle.

We believe that once USB 3.0 becomes more prevalent in portables, the manufacturers will realise that it's not simply for external hard drives. Until then, it is still a viable solution as an external box for capturing and playing back uncompressed professional quality video. It may need a full PC right now instead of a laptop but it's only a matter of time.

What I mean is: It would be helpfull if I could use it to capture SD formats which should have no problems with the bandwidth. Maybe it would even be possible to capture 720p with 8bit per channel. That should be possible as well. If I could use the device already at 720p I would be happy enough for now.

See there are a lot of interactive artists and VJs who would love to have a great capture solution for their laptops. We need such device to get live input from other devices like cam or computer. At the moment there is no satisfying solution around and I am sure there are many ppl who would buy the shuttle as soon as it would run with laptops.

BTW I heard Intel is not planning to have USB 3.0 in their chipsets till mid-end 2011!! Their newest chipsets don't support further pcie 2 connections so the NEC chip can't be connected with sufficant bandwidth. To be honest I don't like to wait till then. As I said I "heard" that, don't know if that's true.

Also heard the MacBook Pro will have USB 3.0. But god knows if that would work (after providing a driver of course).

Please guys this device will rock if you make better hardware support available (even if resolution would be limited). I will spread my word if you do...

I'm glad to see the FME problem can be fixed without waiting for a update. I will probably pick up a shuttle now. Kristian can you confirm that the intensity shuttle works with AMD boards with USB 3.0 on board? like the crosshair IV and a few other boards. would be weird if the shuttle was only exclusively for Intel platforms.

If the required IO bandwidth is for the uncompressed formats, Why don't you have a version of media Express that only captures as the MJPEG format, and allow it to install on a machine with less bandwidth, like my laptop with a PCI express slot adapter? I believe the bandwith for this is lower than HDV and DV. 13 mbps MJPEG vs 25 mbps HDV and DV.

Have you tried the keyboard shortcuts to "Fullscreen = alt +1, Alt +2 for compact?
Also I have had my computer upon rebooting with the shuttle connected, saying driver not installed right. I unplugged it and pluged it back in to fix the problem. Pretty Annoying bug if it continues. Danny Hays

I think BlackMagic doesn't get a huge portion of it's Intensity users. Alot of us just want to be able to see 1080p59.94/60 and not record it. We just want it passed through to our TV screen so we can play in 1080p, but still stream it on streaming websites like Justin.TV, UStream, and Livestream in 720p.

Does the USB limit still apply in that situation?

If it does, I think that is a huge market that BlackMagic needs to tap. Make a product that assists the user in streaming and not capturing.

I think the shuttle just outputs the same resoulution and framerate comming in while in capture mode, I'm using the HDMI output to a Sharp Aquos 46" that tells me in the corner when the resoultion changes. If I setup to capture 480i, set to upconvert to 1080i in the control panel, put it in capture mode set it for 1080i 59.94 the passed through video is still 480i, untill I capture it and then in playback mode it is then 1080i. If your source is 1080i, it will not capture 1080P from that source from my experience. The capture settings need to be set same as the source coming in, unless your upconverting. If I'm wrong I want to know how to capture 1080p, even at 30 frames a second from a 1080i sorce. Danny Hays

I myself am an interactive artist and would buy more than one suttle if it could run on our laptops. In terms of lower "resolutions", 720p would be quite enough for us; I personally know quite a few others that would buy the shuttle if you could use an expresscard adapter or simply any USB 3.0 laptop.
