  1. So I have this video file with no file extension. we'll say it's called "title. " now the problem i'm having is that it is only 15 minutes long and 4.5 GB in size, with no audio. I was going to convert it to mp4 to put it on my ipod, but my video converter can't tell what kind of video it is, & so the converted video comes out as garbage. how do i determine what the proper file extension is?

Try MediaInfo. It should be able to determine the file type without an extension.

  3. thanks now i know it's an avi, sadly that didn't fix my underlying problem of when i try to convert the video to mp4 it either turns out garbage or it plays at double speed altering the duration to 6m01s instead of 15m20s.

You might try Any Video Converter Free Version. I've had good luck with it with some odd formats. I assume you probably already added the .avi extension to it, though that may not help. Or it may be that you just have a badly corrupted file.

  5. How do you know the proper duration is 15m20s ?

Have you successfully played the file in a media player? if so , which ones?

Is there supposed to be audio?

What does gspot say about the file?

Did you try renaming the extension ".avi"

Can you post the mediainfo report , (view=>text) copy & paste the report back
