  1. I've been working in this for about 18 hours now and it's driving me nuts.

I've used the excellent CamStudio 2.0 for years and have been happy enough with it to make several donations over that time. But, after a gap of a few weeks, I ran it yesterday and hit real trouble. After apparently making a recording OK, as soon as I start entering a file name or browsing to a location to do that it vanishes, And its icon vanises from the tray too. No warning, no message.

I've re-installed. I've tried 2.5 instead. I've gone back through several XP Pro System Restores to a week ago. I've removed every reference I can find to 'CamStudio' in the registry and re-installed yet again. I ran sfc /scannow. I did a registry clean with Glary Utilities. Still the same.

Do hope one of the experts here can help please.

  2. Success! An hour or so later I discovered the cause was one or two obscurely corrupt AVI files in the folder I use for output. CamStudio would remain open until I browsed to that destination and then close. If the folder was already chosen, then CamStudio would of course close immediately the Save was initiated. By successively dividing that large file I homed in on the culprit files. After their deletion, all now seems OK.

FWIW, one error message that appeared fleetingly on a couple of occasions was "vscap MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to close." Means nothing to me, and I couldn't find any directly relevant google hits, byt maybe someone here can shed light please?
