How many minutes does it normally take to transfer a 4gb file to an ide or sata external hard drive?

  2. An EXTERNAL hard drive is going to have a secondary connector, such as USB, firewire, or eSata. This will be the more important factor in speed than the actual drives connedtion to the external box.

All esle being equal, SATA is faster than IDE. Trannsfer speed will also be dependent on the hosting drive and PC where the files actually reside.

  3. Very roughly:
    IDE/SATA/eSATA, about 1 to 2 minutes
    USB 2.0, about 2 to 4 minutes
