    i guess Corel WinDVD would play them in progressive ?

    PowerDVD, VLC, KMP, MPC can all play progressive DVDs. Are you watching on your laptop, or connecting it to a TV ?

    All SD DVD's are 480i(interlaced) and software must deinterlace the video to 480p(progressive).
    I use PowerDVD but the other ones mentioned will also work.

    SD DVDs that are encoded as 23.976 fps with pulldown can be displayed as progressive by playing the disc at 23.976 without pulldown (i.e. the original progressive encoding). Anything encoded at 29.970 fps will be interlaced.

    When you get to PAL it is even more confusing because PAL is encoded at 25 fps interlaced, even if it is progressive.
