DVD download Burning problems

ok Iam just totally lost. Could someone sum it up in a nutshell for me How do I burn to my DVD-R burner once I have downloaded a movie from a website? Is there a specific type of download I need? Also all movies seem to large to burn. What & how do I do this? I can burn CD's but I have never tried movies. What do I need? Please kind person help me I have tried for6 hours but still cannot burn
