Is there a way that I can cut a scene from a video in Divx format without re encoding? There is a section that I want to seperate out into it's own video but I do not want to re encode into divx as the quality will be terrible. I originally converted it from DV to Divx in Vdub if that helps.

Then use Vdub to cut setting direct stream copy for audio and video.

vdub, select video->direct stream copy and audio->direct stream copy and cut, see https://www.videohelp.com/guides/category/how-to-cut-join-edit-avi-divx-xvid-wmv-asf-5;19#374

Or do you want to crop?

So let me make sure I have this straight. I do everything like I normally do, but set to direct stream copy on both audio and video and it will save the AVI without re encoding? leaving it Divx?

I want to crop also. How does that vary. I know how to cut and crop and edit but then when I click "Save to AVI" in vdub, it re encodes it. The video is already encoded in divx. I just want to take a part out and leave it divx. I would also like the take a part out and make it, it's own video file. Is this any different? Basically, if I want to make changes (just cuts) to an already encoded video, I don't want to re encode as I don't know if divx would even be legible with a second pass.

    Short answer :

You can only make edits without re-encoding if you cut on I frames using something like virtualdub in Direct Stream Copy mode.

    Long answer :

If you cut between I frames then you must re-encode at the very least the open GOP created by the cut. This could be up to 300 frames or more. The latest virtualdub has smart encoding which will allow you to do this. Older versions forced you to re-encode the whole clip.

If you make any changes to the video (cropping, resizing, filters etc) then you must re-encode the entire clip.

That's kinda kewl. I'm so used to using VirtualDubMod that I really don't use any other version. I did download a new VirtualDub like a couple or so months ago but used it once for a simple project and didn't really "fool around" with it much.

I'll have to look at it more closely now.

The newest versions of Virtualdub are the bomb. Smart render and the blend feature on certain filters with the curve editor can give some pretty cool transitions without having to recode your DivX or XviD files.

There are import plugins you can download to open different file types like WMV, MPEG2, FLV and quicktime. You can also insert different audio files. I've used 5.1 MP3 and 5.1 AC3 with the AC3 plugin.

If someone could build a true dissolve transition filter and if fccHandler builds an h264 import plugin then this will be the only AVI editor that anyone will ever need.

    That's the one, thanks.

Mine is VDub_AC3 but it's the same 28kb file.
