This may get somewhat confusing, but if you have Nero, it uses Nero ASPI, so aspichk.exe will normally show you have no ASPI layer. But you will have Nero ASPI. In other words, you may not have any problem if Nero is working properly. You can run Nero InfoTool (Part of the Nero package), look to ASPI and select 'Nero ASPI' and you will likely see it's already installed. It's called 'WINASPI32.DLL', at least in my version of Vista and Nero
    6.6.0.13.

My guess is that's not your problem with the ASPI layers. But you can install 'Force ASPI' if you like. Burning programs like ImgBurn handle ASPI by themselves, if they even need or use it. I show no ASPI layers in my Vista computer, except for Nero ASPI and I also have ImgBurn. Both programs work fine.

    A few points:

First, I opened infotools and didn't find anything that sats ASPI. I don't know where in infotools to find it. There is no "ASPI" or "Nero ASPI" tab.

Second - OK so considering Maxwell and Memorex both don't work - do you still think its the media?

Third - I noticed in infotool it says that a graphic card and graphic driver upgrade is required. Could that be whats stopping my laptop from burning these DVDs?

If you go through NERO INFO TOOL you'll see whether or not ASPI is installed or not.

try VERBATIM dvd media which is far more superior than MAXELL & MEMOREX dvd media.

do you have SONIC software installed by any chance?

  5. I've checked through NERO INFO TOOLS and I found nothing. Probably cause I don't know exactly where to go (there are 8 tabs). But I browsed through them and didn't find the word ASPI anywhere.

    I don't have sonic.

And I will try the Verbatim when Staples opens up again tomorrow.

It's here in Nero InfoTool. You have to select Nero ASPI in the pulldown menu.

    redwudz beat me to it!
If you look in NERO under the INFO TOOLS under the tab "ASPI" it will tell you if it's installed or not.

Buy the VERBATIM and hopefully it's gonna solve your problem.

I should mention if that's a laptop DVD burner, the laser lens is likely exposed. At least it is in mine. You may just have a chunk of dust on the laser lens. That will lower the laser power considerably and cause a power calibration error. If you haven't done this, clean the lens.

You can do this manually if you see the lens. Or if not, a DVD lens cleaner disc may work. This is what a laser lens assembly looks like:

I use a foam Q-tip slightly dampened with 80% or higher Isopropyl Alcohol, changed often, but there are cleaning solutions that may be better suited. The DVD cleaning discs may work, but if you can see the lens, you may be able to do better manually. I would at least check it. I have to clean my laptop's lens several times a year due to dust.

No, you're not crazy. At least with this. The newer version of Nero InfoTool apparently doesn't have the ASPI tab. But I don't think ASPI is your problem or Nero wouldn't work at all for burning or even communicating with your burner, AFAIK.

  11. OK, so its not my ASPI. And there is no chunk of dust on my lens. We're back to Verbatim media?

So why are you so resistant to buying some VERBATIM dvd media? Buy it and find out if it will solve your problem.
