Only Verbatim is to be considered for Dual Layer DVD. For single layer, there's no single best. Different hardware work best with different disks. But take a look at www.nomorecoasters.com for a comple guide.

I've used Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden in both DVD-R and DVD+R and had no problems. Both are high quality media as you'll find out if you go to the website Mats suggested.
If you want to burn dual layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL. Don't use any other brand and don't use DVD-R DL discs either. Most of us recommend that you burn with ImgBurn (it's freeware) for best results.

I have no idea what the answer is to your question about error handling capability.

Errors are errors, and shouldn't occur. You want a drive that doesn't create errors. Using good media, most new writers don't. LG, NEC... the list goes on. Read the DVD Writer reviews found left. Highest user rating at the mo is NEC ND-3520A.
