Hi,
I just tried downloading divx6.5 (the free version) to my new VISTA computer. It says it doesn't support vista yet.
Where are "safe" links for vista compatible divx downloads?? Is there a pure divx available yet for VISTA?
I do have mediaplayerclassic installed now so will that suffice for divx playback? What about encoding when I need to? What is recommended?

For playback I would try the VLC media player ... for making a DivX file though ... well if DivX is not compatible yet with VISTA then you are probably out-of-luck for creating DivX ... at least for now.
autoGK is great for creating XviD files

Ok thanks. I'll dig around to see about encoding to divx on vista. i don't do it that often but I do want to have the ability handy.
I still have my emachine which is xp so I can still do it - I just want to get all of the basic video editin tools on my new pc so I don't have to go looking for them later.
EDIT - By the way XVID installed no problem on vista. haven't encoded with it yet but no installation hangups

I meant to say encode in xvid.
It doesn't sound like encoding will be needed soon though.
If I was a betting man, which I am, I'd bet that vista compliant divx encoding will be available before you need it. -
I downloaded k lite codec pack, and installed it with no problems I can watch divx xvid no problem with media player 11 on vista. it did ask me if i wanted to reinstall it properly, but i just clicked to say it was installed properly. I have downloaded divx 6.5 before k lite but never noticed anything about not being compatible. but i only used it to encode some movies for my pda. never watched them on pc.

thanks john.....
regarding codec pack I specifically avoid them and will not install them on my new pc. Right now it seems like I can play most of my videos just fine.
I'll dig around to see if I can find divx 6 and try that for vista.
EDIT -
It turns out I was wrong - Divx 6.5 IS compatible with VISTA. It just had a warning about color schemes and stuff with Vista Premium. But I was able to click ahead and I have not had any problems so far. here is a screen print showing a section of Day After Tomorrow converted with virtualdub using divx6.5:

My apologies for jumping the gun. I guess I read the warning and figured it was a total lost cause. but now I have divx and I also have xvid so i am all set.
Thanks for everyones help.

I upgraded my main pc to Vista x64 over the weekend and I installed DivX 6.5. No problems so far.Originally Posted by yoda313
Using VirtualDub the only issue that I have found is that I can only encode to DivX if I use 32 bits version of VDub. If I use the 64 bit, I cannot. -
I dont suppose there are any 64 bit codecs yet, I searched everywhere no joy, and I know this is off subject but, my 64 bit vista keeps crashing, it doesnt stay on long enought to convert anuthing.

I'm sorry to hear that. In my case I was able to install Maindconcept DV coded and DivX and I was able to convert a movie from MPEG2 to DV (using VirtualDub MPG and several filters) and then convert to DivX (Latest Virtualdub and some other filters) just to test the whole thing.Originally Posted by John

I think I will install the Vista Codecs x64 Components package. Probably with these IŽll be able to do something usefull with VirtualDub x64.Originally Posted by John
It should also allow me to use 64bit MovieMaker in x64 Vista Ultimate.
