  1. I have an .avi file that when I play it I get a fairly fast (3 second) green blank screen. when I ask QT for the info format it says:

    , 512 x 384, millions MPEG layer 3 22.050 kHz

it plays in MPlayer OS X

why is that? can it be converted somehow?

    cheers and thanks

If it plays in Mplayer, can you give us some more details about it ? Put the file in mplayer playlist, highlight it, and call the "window info" through the "window" menu (or hit command-i).

  3. MPlayer says this:

    video format:

    05XD, 1246.8 kbps 512 x 384 25 fps

    audio mp3 56 kbps 22 kHz stere0

    Lenth 6 seconds

the file is longer than 6 secs

VLC player also plays it ( the new version, dumped the older one):

    stream 0: codec DX50

    Stream2: codex mpga

I have another file from the same souce and it says the same thing in MPlayer and plays fine in QT. in VLC it says nothing ( the second file)

is this just some sort of corruption?

    thanks for any help

You can try to rebuild the file with D-Vision or AviDemux.

Your "green" file may be an old divx file (fourCC DIV3) that wrongly identifies itself as a new divx (fourCC DX50) file. You can try to change the fourCC using D-Vision or AviFourCCChangerX

First you should install x11 from your MacOS X install DVD (x11 is not installed by default). Then, as you say you got lots of components in a folder instead of a single package in a disk image, I assume that you haven't downloaded the correct file. You should download avidemux for Mac OS X 2.3 preview (bottom of the page) which is universal binary.

why not just install Perian, and THEN see how QT handles the file?
or have you tried this already?

I've gotten older files that would not play correctly to play
    nice after installing Perian.

If after installing Perian and the file doesn't play, then
I'd reccomend D-Vision or ffmpegx to change/recreate the file.

Just a couple of suggestions to see how they might work for you:

    1. DivX Doctor the file.

    -or-

    2. Duplicate your QT Player, set it to run in Rosetta, and see if the file plays there (pre- or post-Divx Doctor'ing).
