CloneDVD will do it with 100% quality with menus on both discs. Of course, you have to rip it first, I recommend AnyDVD if you have the money. They work great together.

You can do it with DVD Shrink or VobBlanker.
I've never used CloneDVD but regardless of what you use, the only way to keep it 100% is if everything you want to put to each disc will fit.
Just because it say's "Shrink" in the name does not mean you HAVE to shrink anything.

Say if on one you want to keep menus & the main movie & the second the menus & extras, if the main movie is larger than the disc you will have to shrink it some so you won't keep 100% quality no matter what program you use.

I've found that doing the 'optional' part he mentions is quite important. Also, some DVDs require a bit more work with Vobblanker than the guide shows if you want the second disk to come out just right...Not a problem once you try a few.

BTW, I ripped the DVDs first using DVDFabDecrypter or DVDDecrypter in File mode.

A simple task, could be done with DVDremakepro. You could blank out ALL extras&ads, and back-up the movie w/menus on disc 1.

Second disc, the opposite. Blanking out the movie but leaving the extras w/menus.

Although you may still have to compress the main movie a bit to get it to fit onto a DVD-R. However, it wouldn't be much to scoff at. 90%-95% of original quality maintained.

dvdshrink cannot (alone) do it while retaining the menu. vobblanker or clonedvd2 can.

i personally use DVDShrink to do movie only then i use titlewriter to readd the original menu. reason i don't just use vobblanker or clonedvd2, is because either of them can set an exact start/end point, only selectable spots. vobblanker can cut in the middle of a cell, but this can cause stuttering if used with DVD Rebuilder.

thats my method. i do it with 95% of my dvd backups. i also do it with tv series dvds. if they have 4 eps on a disc i split it to have 2 disc's with 2 eps each keeping original menus. no quality loss. another way to make sure there is NO compression if after doing this method your movie is still a little too big to fit on a dvdr is to remove unwanted audio tracks from the main movie i remove all non english tracks and usually any commentary tracks also. can sometimes save 200 - 800mb depending on the movie. apart from the ripping of the disc all steps can be done with dvdremake pro. well worth the small fee for the program and done with a graphical user interface also unlike some programs. my steps are. rip with dvd decrypter or dvdfab decrypter then edit with dvdremake pro then burn with imgburn.

Just so nobody get confused, dvdremakepro is not free, nor does it (in any way) produce output with superior quality to what can be done with VobBlanker (which is free).

Yes. Ifoedit (freeware) with this guide https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=248#248 A little involved but I've followed this guide on 3 or 4 backups when I first started out 4-years ago and achieved desired / expected results (DVD9 split across 2 DVDRs with all menus and original quality).

DVDRemakePro is not free, but its SOOO worth it!

Its so easy&straight-foward, saving MANY headaches and frustration. Also a great program to use for any future DVD stuff. Getting rid of and or editing stuff with it, is a snap.

Once again, resohed (the original poster) specified "a free program", which excludes dvdremake. The freeware mentioned will accomplish his task every bit as effectively as the commercial product you're promoting.

Yeah, I've seen him promoting DVDRemake Pro in a number of threads. Sure, it's a good and useful program. Personally though, about all I find it good for is merging 2 or 3 DVDs into one, keeping the menus, which is very difficult using freeware. Other than that, most of what it can do can be accomplished just as easily, if not more easily, using VobBlanker and/or PGCEdit. Like the original question in this thread. I don't really find its use very intuitive, although I would, I'm sure, with more experience with it, and the terminology it uses, in many cases, is the creation of the developer and difficult to understand.

And, as stated, it's not free, a prime requirement of resohed.
