My Panasonic DMR-ES40V is going through fatal error (TM) number 6, not finalizing its DVDs.
Before I decide to get it repaired or exchanged (I got a 2-year warranty from Best Buy, and it's still under the Panasonic 1-year warranty) I would like to know, can another DMR-ES40V finalize my stack of unfinished disks? Or is my current DVD Recorder too unique to have its disks read by its ES40V siblings?

Or what if Best Buy no longer carries DMR-ES40V? Would a newer Panasonic DVD-Recorder be able to finalize?

I'm not sure if a newer model would be able to finalize the discs, but the same model should have no problem at all.

I discussed finalizing a DVD in another post yesterday, and someone said that after you rip it to disk, you can "finalize" it with FixVTS. This actually fixes problems with DVD images, so they are DVD compliant.

I will try this over the weekend because I have a Philips DVDR985
standalone deck, but it was a POS. For $850 I was able to burn about 30 DVDs. I even had it "fixed" by an extended warrantee, but it never worked properly. So I have a few unfinalized DVD+Rs to fix. If I do try it this weekend, I will try to remember to report back on results.
Some days it seems as if all I'm doing is rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic

My DMR-ES10 is able to finalize disks recorded in a DMR-E55 and the other way around.

  7. HI,

About 2 years ago I was able to finalize 2 DVD-R that was recorded using one of the Philips recorder but were not been finalized. Since we could not find a copatible DVD recorder to finalse it, so I just tried to do it in my computer and succeeded.

If I remember correctly, I just burned a tiny file to the root directory using Nero with finalize disc option ticked. It is worth a try.
