  1. Hello everyone

My brother has bought a new lap top and wants to transfer all his music from his old one to his new one. He can do this fine but he's having a problem with wmp playing the files. It plays them fine on his old lap top but when he trys to play one on his new one wmp opens a browser and trys to connect to the internet. As he's not connected to the internet it just comes up with that message 'Carry on working offline...' etc and the file just wont play.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? There is one album that works fine but the rest of them wont play.

If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If I was to take a wild guess, these are wma audio files ? They probably have DRM associtaed with them, which means he has licenses on his old machine that he needs on his new machine to play these files. Under Tools->License Manager he can back the current licenses up, or restore from a back up. He may be able to back them up from his old laptop, and restore them on his new one.

Otherwise, look at fairuse4wma to remove the drm restrictions.

  5. So he does this on his old machine and backs them up on a CD or something? If so how do I install them on the new machine?

If you have a look at the dialogue that opens when you do this, you can choose a folder to back up to, or click the restore button to read them in.

On the OLD LAPTOP backup the licenses and copy them to a USB key or burn them to a CD.

On the NEW LAPTOP use the restore function to read the licenses in. Test to see if you can play the files.
