MKV h.264 HD to MPEG2

Hi

How can I convert mkv file with h.264 HD video and ac3 5.1 sound to an mpeg2 preserving the resulotion ? (and maybe someone can tell me how can i play the above file without glitches on my barton 3200+ ? corrently i'm using the vlc media player and the results are poor :/)

If you can play the mkv with wmp (haali media splitter,coreavc or ffdshow) should it work to convert the mkv with an encoder with directshow reader sujpport like mainconcept mpeg encoder, tmpgenc...or through avisynth with directshowsource.

And play with media player classic together with coreavc( not free but worth it) and haali media splitter for smooooooooth playback.
