I made a short sample of "A Clockwork Orange" by converting the .avi into a mpeg (using TMPGEnc) and burned it onto a CD-RW.
When I played the movie back on my DVD player, the quality was bad (for one thing), but the movie was off centered so 1/6 of the screen was beyond the left side of my TV.
My question is, how do you test out to see if the movie is centered and correct resolution? What resolution do I use to make mpg's out of avi's to play correctly on the TV?
Is this going to be trial and error in which I have to play with the settings according to the type of VCD I'm making (and the type of mpg I convert to), or is there a set procedure for creating the mpg's to play correctly on the Television.
Also, what is the best coversion utility to use? Is TMPGEnc the most used? If so, should I convert using the highest but slowest rate using TMPGEnc.
Thanks in advance for any help, I'm going to be busy all day playing around with my new cd-burner and dvd player!
Peace, Deltron.

When you use TMPGEnc you load in a template, this will either be PAL or NTSC, those templates will set up the conversion of the mpeg correctly.
If the movie (AVI) is letterbox or widescreen, you can change the settings in TMPGEnc, just click the settings button and advanced, you will see the screen type there, and to quickly preview before you select one, double click the "Clip" you can fool around with the screen in there, But I would leave it on the default when ever possible. -
I've read the newbie guides on this site, but what "rule of thumb" do I go by for determining if I should use NTSC or PAL conversion?
For example, this "A Clockwork Orange" .avi movie is 512 x 352 resolution and WindowsMediaPlayer displays about a 30.0 fps rate.
Thanks for the response! I've seen a lot of newbie questions go unanswered here.
Laterz, Deltron -
If you live in North America or Japan NTSC,anywhere else PAL.
Like you said trial & error.
Good Luck -
Alright, so using TMPGEnc, how do I edit the screen position or squeeze the movie from left and right to fit it all onto my TV screen?
What happened is the movie is in widescreen format and I'd say about 1/8 of the film is beyond the left side of my screen, while there is room to spare on the right. How do I edit and play with the settings in order to shift the position? -
Hi
Its best not to change them, but if you use TMPGEnc and hit the settings button, then advanced, then check the "clip frame" double click clip frame to change the settings.
I convert using "full screen keep aspect ratio" (This is default) since I have a wide screen TV with zoom, I don't need to mess up the quality by making it full screen if the original is widescreen. -
Yeah, I see now that Full Screen - Keep Aspect ratio works well. Thanks for all the help.
"and that's the end of that chapter."
