Is there any way to cut real media movie files using virtualdubmod or any other program?

you maybe could use avisynth, real alterantive and import the avisynth script in virtualdubmod but you must reencode to another video format.

Seems some people are allergic to AVISynth or something.

The script will take 2 lines at most, provided that Real Alternative is already installed. One of the lines is a comment header.

    #ASYNTHER DirectShow_NTSC
    DirectShowSource("C:\My Documents\myvideo.rmvb", fps=29.97, convertfps=true)
Obviously, replace fps with the actual fps value.

As already stated, VDub does NOT write to RM format, so you have to save it as AVI or one of the formats that it DOES output to. Then maybe rencode as RM.

Is it ok if I use wordpad instead of notepad? And how would I determine the frame rate of my file?

If you just want a simple cut, remedit. Also might check out the activity at the helix site -- last I checked there were a couple of front ends for the open source producer, including some cutting joining, but it's been a while. Any way you do it however, unless you convert to avi all you can do is go to the Real version of the closest I frame.

Ok, I just got it to work but when I cut only a tiny portion of the file that should be about 30 mb, the final avi file size says that it will be 1360 mb. How do I lower the file size to the first value without losing any quality? I've tried compressing with xvid, but the files are still too large.

Use the slide bar at the bottom of VDub to pick the portion you want to keep, encode until you get to a stop point, and check if the output is okay.

Remember you need to pick Full Processing, and pick a compression codec when saving the AVI, which starts the actual job.

But both of those ways make the file bigger than it actually should be. For example I cut out 5 parts of the clip, which is only half the total running time of the clip. However, all 5 clips are 100 mb greater than the original file when compressing at 100% with the xvid codec in both full processing and fast recompression mode.

    If it helps...

You have a file encoded to real, and using V/Dub you're converting the video to an uncompressed format, then re-compressing it. The size of the file depends on how much you recompress it, as much as it depends on the length. If you don't want to decompress, edit, re-compress, maybe the best thing to do is use something like rmedit, which will simply copy a part of your original file to a new file without changing anything.

Otherwise, if you want the level of compression to stay roughly the same, you have to adjust the settings for the encoder your using, use another codec, or frame serve from V/Dub to a prog. using the Real codecs (something like realanime on ft page here at videohelp).

I've tried google searches for both rmedit and rmtools but can't seem to find any download sites. Can you provide a link for me?
